Another Good 40D Review

I don't know this reviewer but have seen his site and other reviews and found them to be quite useful.

Finally, someone who has actually spent some time with the camera offering their review. That is outside of POTN. There have been some rather good reviews by POTNers, much better the CNET, that’s for sure.

I've been scouting out all the reviews I can to compare and contrast results. There are variations but consistently the camera is getting good to excellent reviews and I have not seen anyone bashing or finding flaw.

It may not live up to some of the expectations, but then again, much of the expectation was purely speculation in the first place and not based on data released by Canon.

I actually think it's great that Canon might have played it safe with the 40D and not tried to throw in the kitchen sink. People can talk all day about not seeing major change (myself included) but producing a new model that is popular with no glaring problems or oversights in engineering is a great thing for any company and I'm sure it bodes quite well for Canon.

We'll see if the same can be said of the competition come November and December.

the only problem with 40d is that we won't see many cameras with 10 megapixels in 2008: both dSLRs (including Rebel Xti replacement) and p&s cameras will have 12 megapixels.
Canon needs 12mp to keep up with Nikon and Sony even though it might hurt 40d sales...

I (and many others) suspect that is exactly what is up Canon's sleeve for the next generation 5D and then the next xxD. I think that is where we are going to see the bigger jump in engineering.

If circumstances were in my favour, i was going to wait to see how Canon responded to the D300. I was hoping for a few more focal points (not necessarily 50+) and a better flash system (although I doubt that will ever happen; Canon seems to like their current approach). Mexapixels aren't that important to me, nor were were higher ISO shots. I was briefly tempted by the D300, but Canon's lens lineup brought me back. My camera was stolen, though, so I'm just waiting for my insurance money and I'll be picking up the 40D. It makes me glad to see good 40D reviews.

Looking at this and other tests online, the 20D/30D seems to have less noise than the 40D or about the same. The 40D definitely does not seem to have better noise control than the model it replaces. For me, going from 8 to 10MP is also trivial. Seeing the 30D does all I really need, I guess I don't really have a desire to upgrade.

If I was going to get a camera, I'd get the 40D, but I don't see myself upgrading though.

IQ is a huge step up from my XT.

I'm really loving my 40D too! It really is a big step up from my 20D and I love it too! It's really a surprise to see all the features in it, much more than I expected. The IQ is excellent, the AF is outstanding, live view is cool, and the 3" screen is fantastic!

I can't say enough about the camera!
