I disagree... I don't own a 40D but the prints from my 5D are easily superior than prints from my 30D.

Fell in love with photos.. made lots of money.. fell out of love with photos.. took a long break.. trying to find my love again.

I would certainly hope so, with the 5D having 50% more pixels than the 30D.

Interesting, John B. seems to differ with you on this.

Another vote for the 5D from me, ive used a 30D before now & to be honest I never liked it all that much, after looking through the 40D VF I cant really say its all that much better either, maybe its me but I just enjoy the 5D a whole lot more than I ever did with the cropped bodies, my main use is landscapes & indoor shots at high ISO's (churches etc) so I guess im using the 5D for what it was designed for.

If it where me....with a new model maybe coming out....I would get the glass you want for FF....and wait for the new 5D. If the new 5D doesn't have features you feel are worth the upgrade...then you will be able to pick up all those older 5D's that will hit the market when others do upgrade. Get the 40D for now....and then get a used 5d...keep the 40D as a back up.

This would be ideal, but unfortunately I would either have to hypnotize or kill my wife first! ;)

If you bought a 40D you will always be wondering in the back of your mind, if it was the right decision, If I was shooting what you shoot, I would own a 5D, and yes the truth is if you put the 2 images from 5D and 40D next to each other, at 10x8, most would not know, 11x14, I do think a few more would notice the difference, many may argue they can, some will, but I put money on it that once you use a 5D you will be printing out larger to put on your wall, or someone will want a bigger print, and large prints from online labs are pretty cheap now.
I am looking at the future, you should too :) 5D was designed for your use, in the long run it is the cheaper option.

As for Live view, some do use it for landscape shoots, most are using it for macro, another 5D specialty

Well good luck with your choice, it is not an easy one, you know my opinion, and I don't own a 5D I own a 40D, but I shoot 90% sports on large fields, so it is worth e 1.6 crop for me

I have seen superb work from the xxD cameras in terms of landscapes with the 10-22 lens. I personally think the differences will be subtle for landscape work, esp. at "normal" ISO's. Michael Reichmann from Luminous Landscape, who's rather fussy about image quality, thinks they are comparable - see http://luminous-landscape.com …s/canon-40D-handson.shtml (external link).

To me a lot of the attraction of the 5D/FF comes down more to viewfinder and lens ranges and thus to your style. How much does changing a lens bother you - there's nothing comparable to a 5D with 24-105 for a wide-mild tele walkaround lens. If you do your landscapes hiking with one camera and one lens, or traveling around the city, that might be a huge attraction. If you bring a pile of gear anyway changing from 10-22 to 17-55 (or whatever) shouldn't be a big deal.

versedmb,

If budget is a chief concern, the 40D packs a lot of bang for the buck, as did the 30D before it. There are many satisfied users of the 10-40D cameras! I'm one of them!

However, I also have a 5D for, you guessed it, landscapes and other types of "demanding" work. I might grab the 30D for a wildlife escapade (because with a good telephoto lens I can "frame" (crop) an image in advance), but when I'm doing something that will involve max detail, light sensitivity, things that will require a tripod to get utmost quality, then I will go for the 5D. Understand, though, that I use mostly L lenses, because quality comes first with me.
