OK I have been beating myself to death over which lens to buy for this camera and I am down to the 17-55 is or the 24-105 is on the short end and the 70-300is or the 70-200f4 non is or the 70-200 f4is (really dont want to spend the extra $ on the f4 is unless I need it-probely do. If the 24-105 is better I could get a wider lens later but I think I may need the extra F stop what do you think?!). I am also getting a 100 2.8 macro and a 50 1.8 lens as well
I have a 3 yr old and a 6 yr. old and they move (a little ha) and the kit lens just doesnt cut it. I am getting alot of blurring and no sharp pictures at all.
I am coming from a Canon Pro 1 p\s Camera and the photos it is taking are blowing away the xti. I know 90% is probely me but a couple of good lens will definately help I HOPE Please help me before I go nuts thanks

1755 IS and 70-200 f4 IS. Won't find better zooms optically in their class.

I dont recommend the 24-105.. unless you are intending to purchase a wider angle lens to cover the range less than 24. In this case the 10-22 (you have no idea the fun it would accord you with) would be perrrrfect. For most daily usage, the 12-35mm range is usually used alot more than the rest.

Othewise get the 17-55 IS... dont miss out on the wides..

The kit lens stopped down to f/8 should be able to blow away your old camera. If it does not, its your inexperience in knowing what to expect from a dSLR in terms of post processing that is making the old camera look better. Your old camera looks better for a few reasons:
1) the dof is huge - that tiny lens and sensor has huge depth of field - everything is sharp. A dSLR has much less dof and focusing on the thing you want in focus is much more critical.
2) The old camera produces saturated colors and heavily sharpened jpegs. The dSLR deliberately avoids that. If that's what you like, you have to do some post processing. I dont know if the XTi has enough ways to boost this in some menu setting.

A better lens will of course be better. Better build, faster glass f/2.8, better focusing in low light, sharper in the corners, better resistant to flare, etc. But it won't be a miracle.

The 10-22 is a hoot. The 17-55IS is a grat walk around lens, but expensive, and the 70-200f/4 is a terrific value for an L lens.
