Does anyone of us have the same problem with 40D flash settings? I wonder if I was doing something wrong for setting up my external 580EX.

My Canon Speedlite 580EX flash was attached properly to the camera hotshoe and already turned on before I swiched to the flash settings:

- (Camera) Menu Yellow: /Flash control/Flash firing: Enable

With External flash func setting, the screen was as of:

Flash mode: E-TTL II (gray color, unable to change)
Shutter sync.: 1st curtain (gray color, unable to change)
FEB: -3..2..1..0..1..2..+3(gray color, unable to change)
Flash exp comp: -2..1....1..+2 (changeable)
E-TTL II: Evaluative (changeable)

Question 1: How can I use the first three features (flash mode, Shutter sync., and FEB) while they don't allow me to change?

Then I switch into the next feature External flash C.Fn setting and Clear ext. flash C.Fn set. the screen shows up with this for each option:

This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off

Question 2: I did check the flash power and it stayed on, but why do I have no option for the last two settings?

I would appreciate all your suggestions to fix or reset my settings.
Thanks,

580EX has option for 2nd curtain. 40D only allow to change to 2nd curtain at built-in flash. If the 2nd curtain is set that way by built-in flash, will it be affected when external flash turned on?

Is that because the 580EX isn't ETTL II? I'm assuming my Sigma EF-500 DG ST (ETTLII) will work with the 40D.

Can anyone verify this?
