Does the canon reblel have a grid? I'm trying to grasp the thirds rule and thought this would be helpful.

I don't have one, but I'm sure it doesn't - my 30D hasn't.

The "rule of thirds" doesn't have to be followed rigidly, so estimating thirds in the viewfinder isn't that difficult. With a bit of practice it will come naturally.

When did voluptuous become voluminous?

this may work, but keep in mind canon did not design the focus screen on a rebel to be able to be changed by the user....so i'd be sure it's relatively easy to do before you go for it.

Changing the focus screen on a Rebel is very easy, there is a .pdf tutorial floating around for the xxD series, the directions are exactly the same. Its just very small and easy to misalign.

Composition and the 'rule of thirds' should really come from the eye and not a grid on the screen. Keep taking pictures and studying them and you'll soon instinctively learn the right composition for your shots. Remember, practice makes perfect!

The Rule of Thirds is very simple...

Most pictures look best when the subject is not centered, therefore:

If the subject is larger vertically (an upright person), place it about one-third of the way into the image horizontally.

If the subject is larger horizontally (a sports car), place it about one-third of the way into the image vertically.

If the subject is small, less than one-half the image size in both the horizontal and vertical directions, place it one-third of the way into the image in both directions.

Moving or directional subjects usually look best when they appear to be coming into the image, not leaving it.

Basically, this is done because there is usually more to a picture than the subject itself.

Naturally, there are many exceptions to the Rule of Thirds, but to make these exception work for you requires a grasp of composition, and that requires a grasp of the Rule of Thirds.
