I've no concerns about the file size myself, but - even though I'm delighted with the 40D's IQ - I do wonder how much better again high ISO noise performance would have been with a new 8 mp sensor.

I've upgraded from a 30d [Still got it] and i like the 40d a whole lot more....

And this is what i like......

I love the bigger brighter VF, not just that though, i also like that i can actually read the info bar in the VF in bright sunshine! something that was almost impossible on my 30d.... i think this one element has improved my photography no end!

I absolutely love the new AF system - I really do think this has upped my keeper rate, i can't really fault it! it's definitely outperformed my 30d in this respect - it may be no 1d, but it ain't no slouch.......

I like the new layout of the buttons on the top plate - The new configuration just makes much more sense.

I love the 3 Camera user settings [C1,C2,C3] and i also like the customisable My menu

I love the AF-ON button shame they didn't put one on the grip but enough has been said about that......

I like the 3" screen, not for the size [though that's nice too] but the colours just seem better and much more accurate to me than my ol' 30d's display....

I like the 6.5fps and the bigger buffer

I doubt i'll get much use of it, but i love the new Live View feature. I'm sure if i ever get into macro, it'll be a godsend! and even if i don't, i'm sure i'll find a situation that it'll help me out someday.......

Ergonomics, i just love the feel of the camera, the grip is just a touch bigger, and that coupled with the finger groove makes the camera much nicer to hold [at least for me]

Finally, i just love the pictures it churns out - i believe alot of the things above have really and truly lead to improvements in my photography and the images i'm getting.... and i'm sure the 14bit processing, digic III and 10mp aren't hurting either!!

There's many other little features that i like about it but those above are the ones that really make a difference to me. It's a great camera, and i feel it is a more than worthy upgrade to the 30d.

Coming from an XT (350D) the bigger size, and viewfinder instantly made it worth it.
Took a shot with my flash mounted and I loved it.

I am dissapointed with the Tungsten white balance performance though.

Switched to the "dark side" but I like these boards.

no, both my AWB and tungsten balances give me the same green/yellow hue.

You all reminded me - the 6.5fps w/larger buffer is nice. There seems to be a faster connection to the CF card - it formats and writes to the same CF card FASTER than my 20D.

I had a 30D and now the new 40D for me is 10 times better overall, but I think overall I like the AF, and tracking, and improved VF most

same from a 350D here.

This was the decisive factor for me. My 30D still puts food on the table and it doesn't shortchange my shots whatsoever, but the viewfinder difference is great and since my vision is not as it was 30 years ago, this has helped a lot. I thought about going for the 5D but that will be next year.

I like the fact that it takes REALLY GOOD, with some dare I say EXCEPTIONAL, pictures when I do my part. I also like the fact that it works with all my Canon glass.

I love my 40D! After shooting with a 350D for the past two years, this upgrade is BIG one! I love the viewfinder, the 3" LCD display, controls are laid out more sensibly, etc. I have big hands so after I got the BG-E2N grip my 40D feels great.

I also love the Hightown Priority and High ISO noise reduction features, but they do slow down the frame rate. Oh, did I mention frame rate? 6.5 fps vs. 3 fps on my 350D, wow! Chasing birds has become more fun and successful than ever. I'm looking forward to the Miramar Air show and plan on giving my 40D a serious workout.

Most of you have seen my thread about being disapointed in finding so much dust on the sensor in under two weeks. I'm over it, but am a bit bothered by the few remaining blobs that one member here said I won't be able to get rid of.

To be honest, now, I'm afraid to clean my sensor, and I spent over a 100 bucks to get all the stuff, scope, swabs, and solution. On one hand, it seems to me that cleaning these things isn't rocket science, but on the other hand, with the sensor-shaker, type sensor, I don't want to ruin it and have to pay probably several hundred bucks to have Canon replace it.

Overall, I love the 40D and think that Canon has put together an excellent camera.

The lingering question is: to clean or not to clean..?

Michael

After filling 2 2GB cards in a day, well, more like 3 hours... I decided that I am actually going to use the sRAW+L jpeg for snapshots and the like. I figure I won't be blowing up birthday party shots and whatnot past 11x14. Might as well save the space. For other stuff, I'll go back to the full RAW size.

Stop making this camera so tempting! :D If I had one it would be the ISO control, and FPS.

Coming from a 300D, there's no comparison. Everything is an order of magnitude better with the 40D. Except ... the On/Off switch.

The good stuff:

Faster turn-on, faster to save images, faster to display images
ISO in the viewfinder and top LCD
Excellent viewfinder (got the focus screen with grid-lines)
User settings C1, C2, C3
My menu
Joystick to directly select focus points (C.Fn III-3)

Larger view finder and focus speed did it for me.
