Upgrading from the 20D I like the larger LCD and the new menu system. The "My Menu" is very nice! Lets me toss my most used features in one spot.

LiveView has enhanced my macro work - I love it!

ISO performance, while not as great as a 5D or 1DMarkIII - is an upgrade from my 20D, and for $1300, I can't complain.

The physical feel is very nice, along with ISO in the viewfinder, etc.

What I dislike: 10Mp... My CF card fills up too quick :-D Give me 8Mp again :-)

Dude.. that's what Large Standard is for (vs Large Fine, the default). :D

Seriously, you don't lose a whole lot in Standard JPEG compression but you do gain buffer space and save CF space. Want a 99-shot buffer? No problem, Large Std. And you still have the pixels to crop, unlike Medium Fine. This is a little known secret. Drop down one compression level and you are rewarded with a much bigger buffer. Even at ISO 3200, where the normal Large-Fine buffer is 49 shots, dropping down to Large-Std gives me 99 shots..!!! So now I have a 1DMk3 buffer for not a whole lot of compromises!

I worked this out a while ago. For events, I don't need absolute maximum quality. However, I did want the ability to crop aggressively where I needed to, so Medium (5MP on 40D, a bit more on 5D) was out of the question. Our target resolution was 4MP for production use. Amazingly as it seems, sometimes, just sometimes, your final production usage DOES NOT warrant every megapixel.. wow! whodathunkit.....

Anyway, I figured out Large-Std was the ideal compromise. Crop-ability still there, almost no perceptible loss of quality whether in print (8x12") or pixel peeping.

I recently posted a batch of shots in Large-Std compression....and nobody can tell :D (some made it to print too, and even I can't tell)

Live view.

I was a big time critic of the whole concept of live view but I'm now converted. It's now so easy to focus in low, low light or to focus on something outside of the AF points. Live view is totally awesome.

What I like (coming from a 30D):

Viewfinder - Somewhat bigger, and much brighter. This includes the brighter info display and constant indication of ISO.

Hand grip - The 40D sits in my hand much better than the 30D because of the new shape. I spent a little while switching back and forth between the 40D and 30D, and I realized it was something that had been annoying me for a long time when using heavy lenses. It's a much appreciated change.

Live view - I'm not sure how useful this is for day-to-day shooting, but I can think of many situations where it will be quite handy. Live RGB histogram, zoomed manual focusing, and exposure previewing are all great additions. I'm also really excited about the tethered shooting live view option.

LCD - Yes, it's bigger, but Canon's lousy low resolution preview images mean it's impossible to judge focus sharpness with the display. The colour accuracy is much improved from the 30D, which always seemed to have a very cold cast.

Menus - This is a small but welcome change. I no longer have to dig through the entire menu system to find options that are usually at opposite ends of the list. Custom functions are also more straightforward.

Drive mode
- 6.5fps is just cool. The 30D's raw buffer was never really enough, and the 40D improves this to some extent.

AF-ON button
- I'm still figuring out whether this makes a big difference to me. I seem to have the 40D set exactly the same as the 30D. I'm not sure if there's a configuration that will allow me to take advantage of having the AF-ON button, but we shall see.

AF speed - Seems to be a bit better, but I haven't had a chance to do any proper AI-Servo tests. Canon's claimed 30% would be great.

What I don't like:

Shutter - The shutter sounds cheap, and I can feel the vibration of the mirror motors through the hand grip. They should have put some damping material in to suppress the vibrations.

Clicky buttons - I much prefer the feel of the rubbery buttons on the 30D.

Overall I am quite pleased with the 40D, but I'm a bit bummed about having to sell my 30D. It feels like I'm getting rid of an old friend :(

Page 154 of your manual. Basically:

  • Go to custom function C.Fn I-3--Exposure: ISO Expansion.
  • Choose "On" (1).
For the ISO speed, "H" (equivalent to ISO 3200) will be selectable.

I was all excited about getting my 40D in untile I started reading the threads. I'll let you guys know what I think when I get it in next week. Until then i hope I read some more postive stuff.

Its my first digital slr...so its so superior to the old slr, that hasn't seen the light of day for 8 years, blame that on the p&s . Just wish I had it longer so I could be better with it.

The best thing is it has rekindled my interest in photography, at the same time as pounding my savings. 17-40L, 10-22 sigma and just cause I had to have it the 100-400L IS. Ohh the 580ex11 and now I might have to lash out again for lightroom :lol::lol:....where does it end????

As they say there are no pockets in shrouds...

I got my 40d in early Sept. since then been reading these forums and trying to see how other people felt about it. I read a lot of reviews from people that had a 30d and didn't think it was a very worthy camera to upgrade to. So be it, I upgraded from the Rebel 350xt and feel it's a sweet camera. I just wanted to write and share with others that I really do like this camera a LOT. I love it's IQ at high ISO's, the speed, the 3 inch display and so much more. If you have the money and need a solid camera, u can't go wrong. I am just seeing so much complaining about dust, how nikon is better and not many people really saying they like the 40d. I wish everyone could have this camera. Forget silly arguements over 5d's or what camera is the best. I am not even trying to say it's the best...it's just a solid camera that can offer a lot to a photographer. I am sure there are skilled people that can get better pics then me with a disposable. So, hopefully more people echo some postive vibes for the 40d here and say what they like about it.

I love IQ an low noise very close to my 5D, 6.5fps, low shutter noise, 3 inch LCD, 14 bit raw, large buffer, live view, focusing screen, in camera flash menu, highlight priority mode.

FPS and AI Servo. My keeper rate is through the roof. With the FPS more than double of my XTi and the AI Servo accuracy, I'm getting more keepers than I'm used to....not that I'm complaining;)

Great focus speed and accuracy. Even my nifty 50 would focus in low light. I was getting consistant focus lock on the black railing of my balcony at 9pm last night.

Can't hate too much on noise that looks like this at ISO 1600 w no Noise Reduction, in camera or out:

I'm love my new 40D, but I'm bringing it back to the retailer in exchange for another one. Pictures are coming out soft, and some slight front focusing... enough to really annoy me.

Love the camera, but gotta watch out for the first 40D's that roll off the assembly line, they are prone to more quality problems on the manufacturing level (I don't know this for a fact, and hopefully Canon upholds there quality and standards regardless when a camera is manufactured. I make this statement because I've worked in a similar manufacturing environment).

There have been other reports of front focusing and AF issues I've read here on POTN, and hopefully I'll be happy with my exchanged 40D (going this morning!)

One other thing I don't like is the severely reduced raw buffer when noise reduction is enabled.
