G7 Eating Memory Cards?

Hi,

My father-in-law has a G7, and while on a trip to Spain he had some critical malfunctions with his memory cards. He had two cards both go wonky, no error messages (like my DSLR) just freezes up. One card became unreadable by both the camera and the computer. With the other card he sensed a problem and quickly shut-down the camera and removed the card. It retained a corrupt filename, but no picture.

Are we just talking coincidence?
Is this a firmware problem with the G7?
Anything else?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have had no problems with any of the SD cards I have used (3 different brands) on my G7.

There might be a fault on the G7. Did you try to format the SD card in camera? It might help.

Did he format the cards in the camera before he started to use them (instead of formating them on the computer)? If so, that's the problem. If not, I think he has a defective camera.

on a side note, but may be of use: I know that powering down the camera and quickly whipping out the card will often cause images to become corrupt ( mainly the latter images ). try waiting at least 5 seconds after powering camera off before taking out the memory card. This issue used to happen in my G3.

Also don't forget the almighty lock on memory cards. :D

Format with camera after photo transfer to computer.

See if there's any bent or deeply gouged teeth on the memory card?

Try to use some recovery programe, most of the time, only the index is corrupt. It means that everything is recoverable, as long as you don't write something on the disk.

As for G7, I do format using the cam, I do power on/off quickly... and never had any problem. But, I realised that switching SD card between different devices usually cause problem. The last time happened with my HP PDA, and a friend's cam.

Thanks - I'll pass the tips along. The advice to format in-camera might have some validity - I'm not sure if he does that - and it wouldn't surprise me if he did not.
