I my have a need soon for onsite printing. I the past I have heard good thinks about the Kodak 1400 (now discontinued). I have seen the Hitechs but they are limited to 6 x 8. Does anybody have any current recommendations for something that will do up to 8x10?

Thanks,
Rich

this is what we use for onsite printing,
http://www.imagingspectrum.com …ter-CHC-S1245-pr-870.html (external link)

it spools really fast and prints in about 30 seconds (total of 45 seconds per 8x10 @ 300dpi printing from Photoshop CS2 on a small PC 2.4ghz with 1gig of Ram)

We were using a pair of Kodak 8500's and they were ok, but too slow and started to get random paper jams, as well as costing about $2.25/print vs the $1.35 of the Shinko (this is media cost and does not include the cost of the printers).

The single Shinko is much faster than the 2 8500's, it was actually faster than me. With the 8500's I would have 4-5 print jobs in queue per printer and have to wait for them. I'd get to the point that the Shinko would be sitting there waiting for me to send it something.

We have used the Kodak 1400 and I just bought my own. They make a great print, the cost is good too. I have seen 200-500 for the printer. Print costs is not bad, about 1.60+ .

I seriously want the Shinko S1245. It will print 280 8x10's without having to change a ribbon or paper. Prints in much less time and for a lot less cost too. But it comes with a price, $2500.

We charge $15/unit (unit is 1 8x10 sheet consisting of either 1 8x10, 2 5x7, 4 4x5, or 8 wallets). One event can pay for the unit if you use 2/3 of the supplied paper. you can get up to $4200 from one roll at $15/unit.

We have since upgraded to the Shink 1245 and are glad to say that with one roll (which came with it) is now gone after a few events. Best investment next to the camera.

What did you end up paying for the Shinko?

Kodak 1400 has great colors - easy to set up - about 90 sec. print time - but as it is a sheet fed printer, it neeeds to be have ribbon/paper replaced every 50 sheets. Last year we moved away from the Kodaks to Sony machines (roll fed) - still have a few 1400's around here somewhere - give me a shout if you you are interested.

We actually got it for $1600. We probably would not be able to print 120 sheets per event without it. The kodak is great our main problem is that we had to trim each sheet and hand feed the printer since we operate in a somewhat dusty environment the head and rollers needed to be cleaned constantly. The shinko is as sealed as sealed can get.

That is a very good deal.

We did a job last month and I was able to pop out 280+ prints (used the last part of 1 film roll and then an entire film roll) in 5 hours.

We might get another Shinko and set up 2 photo sets and print areas if we end up getting one of the larger Naval Battle Groups. That might end up being a nightmare doing an event that large, though. We'll see what happens.
