Toby - the UK can have our dangerous spiders etc as far as I'm concerned :) Truth be told, the Australian continent is ancient, and has pretty much remained unchanged since Gondwanaland was a megacontinent. I suspect many primitive spiders needed to make sure that they killed their prey. Interesting enough, funnelwebs seem to only affect primates (via neurotoxins, hence their family name Atraxis). Can't remember if mouse spiders (closely related to funnelwebs) are the same. Trapdoor spiders, which I believe belong to the Tarantula family, can give nasty bites but are not fatal.

Except to non humans(apes) i believe

Trarantulas= no dead people+dead dogs and cats
Funnel webs = dead people BUT no dead dogs and cats;)
