So I recently switched to a 1dmk2n from my 20D and my 28-75 is not wide enough for me by any means. I shoot alot of cars and I like the wide look so Im looking at getting the 17-40L.

I would also like to start shooting more live concerts and as Im sure you all know, light is not always great so im worried about having the slower aperture. The last show I went to I shot some shots at ISO 1600 @ F4 and had pretty good results, but im a bit apprehensive about selling the 28-75 since its a stop faster.

The other thing I was considering is selling the 28-75 for the 17-40(since the wider is the more important need) and then If I decide the F4 is not fast enough(like in situations where I cant use a strobe) adding the 50 F1.4.

Your thoughts???

my 28-75 sigma is not wide enough

I think you mean your "Tamron". But getting to the point, how about the Sigma 24-70 f2.8? Those extra 4mm can be useful. Or have you thought about getting some fast primes? Maybe the Sigma 20 f1.8? Or if you need a faster, wide zoom, then the 16-35 f2.8 L?

I'm confused. How is it not wide enough but apparently wide enough before? Not to mention, it should seem wide since it's one a 1.3 crop and not 1.6.....

aniwho, i say sell it andget a sigma 24-70 F2.8 since at concerts zoom is nice. The 17-40 is just not enough. Unless you are directly on stage, 40 just won't cut it. At least for me it didn't and I have 18-50. Now that you have a MkII, the ISO levels will be nicer so F4 ain't such a problem, btu I still say stay in the F2.8 area and go sigma if money is a problem. I'm assuming it is since you're talking about the 17-40 which is under $500 and not a F2.8L.

haha i had 2 windows open and one was for a sigma lens on BH so i must have confused myself. The 28-75 was never wide enough, when all I had was my 20D i had the tamron 17-50. All of the venues I would be shooting at are VERY small, and almost everything I shot was at 28mm and sometimes I was STILL too close. Id love to get the 16-35 but i cannot by any means afford it, nor will I anytime soon. The reason why I didnt consider the 24-70 sigma is because I really want the really wide FL for shooting cars.

That must be tiny. I've been up front right under bands and 70-200 still stay mostly attached. You must not do much closeups then.

by very small what I really meant was TINY TINY TINY haha. At almost all of the venues I go to, even with the 1.3 crop, I can shoot at 50mm and be framed from the shoulders up. Id love to shoot at some of the bigger venues but I dont really have any means to do so.

Then go Tammy 17-50 F2.8 or 18-50 F2.8 so you ISO levels will be down. Yes yes, the USM is sacrificed, but i almost use MF all the time lately just becaue my AF on the 70-200 is broke for the most part. Works fine for me.

I believe you'll experience vignetting on a 1.3x crop with either Sigma or Tamron. The Canon 16-35 f/2.8L can be had for around $900- $1,000 because of the release of the MK II version. That should work fine on the 1D series.

Stuff..

I forgot about that. Yeah, go with the 17-40L. Someone did a test i though on vignetting and how bad it'd be.
