It seems no matter how hard i try, my 40D still casts a yellow/green Hue in tungsten light, using both the AWB and Tungsten settings. Infact....my XT handles it better...
Anyone else have the same issues?

yeah i probably will get a white card now.
I just expected better performance than my XT for correcting it.

well i saw another post, and i'm glad it's just not me.
I was gonna tear if my camera turned out to be defective though.
All other WB conditions are awesome!

this was just playing with my camera in my room, trying to get a feel for it..
It's much, much different than my XT, and it was like learning the camera all over again.
But today i'm gonna be out in shooting regular conditions now that i got the feel for it.

Tungsten lighting can vary quite a lot - in the range of 3000 degrees Kelvin to 4000K.

Many years ago when I was experimenting with tungsten lighting I had the choice of expensive quartz-halogen lights at 3200K or photoflood lights at 3800K. Since the film was balanced for 3200 I had to use a filter with the photoflood lights.

No doubt the 40D's tungsten white balance is spot-on for some studio lighting - not necessarily the same lighting as your XT.

Can't remember what the typical color temperature of ordinary light bulbs is...

Bukka,
I did a comparison between my 5D and 40D in tungsten only lit room and in AWB the 5D was superior to the 40D. I then set both cameras to Tungsten light setting and they both looked the same. So I found my 40D AWB isn't as good as my 5D but luckily when set manually its equal.

how about the actual tungsten setting?
My 40D does just as poorly when set to the actual mode.

Bukka,
I don't know, but the tungsten setting worked fine on my 40D.
Maybe post a photo taken with both cameras in the same light/same subject/same lens with both cameras in tungsten setting so we can see the difference.

In another thread Doug Pardee pointed out that tungsten WB is set for 3200K studio lights, while most home lighting is 2700-2900K.

Here's that other thread: https://photography-on-the.net ….php?t=384546#post4022820

Well I just did another test (I deleted the first) with a 5D and 40D with a 17-40L lens in tungsten light. The photo is of an off white wall and is only to show a comparison between the two cameras AWB and Tungsten settings. I take back what I said earlier  because in this test they came pretty close in AWB and Tungsten.

Again like I have said before they are both great cameras :)

I always set WB to 2800K if I'm in tungsten lighting.

Yep, works now. Aside from the 40D exposure being about 1/3 stop lower, they look very similar to me.

As for AWB vs. tungsten, only you can tell us which is more accurate. Is either one close to the real color of the wall?

Sigh. Another reason I need a 40D. Sniff.
