People always talk like the camera dies when the shutter goes. Can't it simply be replaced?

Yes. It's a couple hundred $$ but much cheaper than a new body.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I never used to worry about shutter life before until joining this forum. NOw, i sweat everytime i take a frame....especially if i'm just screwing around.

Anyone ever come up with a cost per picture regarding shutter life?

If you take the going price of a 40D at $1,299 then you are paying 0.012 cents per pic. If it dies at 100,000 shots.

For an XTi it would be 0.001 at 100,000 shots and 0.012 cents at 50,000. Thats at a price of $594.95 (B&H Black Body Only).

Funny thing is when you think about this is that the cost per shot of the XTi and 40D break down to be about the same if the shutter dies when Canon says it will.

And yes I did a bit of rounding on the numbers, but it was still fun.

~~~~~~~~~
Updated pricing on XTi to B&H.
When making estimates for shutter repair, country specifics have to be included.
It may only be a couple of hundred in the US, but Angus isn't in the US.
Angus - Canon Australia will hook you close to $600 for a shutter replacement. At that point, you will need to decide whether the camera is worth repairing. If it is a 5D or so, probably - but if it is a 350D or 400D or XTi - it would be a marginal call as you could buy a new replacement for a little more.
No-one can tell you whether your camera is going to last the next 50,000 - as others have repeated - it is a crapshoot - either your number comes up or it doesn't.
Mine has 11.000+ and I had it about a year now.I used to take 5-6 shots of the same subject and choose the best ones and delete others.
You cant... The only body you can check the shutter count on is a 1D Series body (1D or 1Ds bodies)
Canon will tell you th shutter count on your 400D if you send it to them.
bannedPermanent ban
Short of sanding it over to Canon service centre, there is no way for the user to get the reliable shutter count on 400D.
Edit: Ups, too slow!
What we see depends mainly on what we look for.
