Do you guys have any tips on how to sequence your image numbers when using two cameras? I can see I'm going to run into problems due to same image numbers

The straightforward solution is to use a downloader program to rename the files when you pull them off the cards. "Downloader Pro" from Breeze is frequently mentioned. Myself, I use my DAM software (idImager Pro).

I use Lightroom and it easily allows me to rename the files.

The nice thing is once all the pics are in from both bodies, I choose "Capture Time" as a sort order and it nicely dovetails the shots from both cameras.

I just ran into a problem with my two 20D bodies. Whats the odds, 1 on 10,000 that my two bodies would reach the same number on the same day? Would have lost about 150 images if I hadn't had a backup.

I rename my images AS SOON as I hit my hard drive storage drives (Hyperdrive) to combine images. They get 'MyLastName_Date_ImageNumber.CR2'. With the discovery of this little problem I have started adding the first two digits of the serial number of the camera it was shot on to the filename. So I get Milleker_070926_3479_10.CR2 and I no longer worry about overwriting images.. Until the next problem.. :)

I down load them into different folders then name them all a,b,c,d ext for the order I want then put them all in one folder then rename them all at once one last time.

I've been using multiple cameras for several years now. As long as the files are downloaded into different folders and the folders are properly named, there's should be issues with duplicate file names. Like others, I rename my files to conform to my own filing methodology, but even if you didn't rename the files, a good library file structure should prevent issues.

I have implemented Peter Krough's (Digital Asset Management book) naming scheme and directory structure. I could make a directory for each camera inside my main structure but I really enjoy having everything in one folder and then separated into DVD sized folders.

I no longer name my directories or files to the event. Directories have a basic name and the files as I mentioned above. However lightroom takes care of collections and tags. So, as long as Lightroom stays around (or any new program can read tags) I shouldn't have a problem.

with anything but 1d series, i would suggest batch renaming by date, but make sure that you keep the files in separate folders or else there is a chance you'll overwrite files (assuming the numbering is close enough to overlap). on 1d, just set the custom filename to 1d1 and 1d2 (or similar) and then rename... or just get lightroom and categorize your catalog by shoot time and you're fine 95% of the time (how many times will you shoot both cameras at the same time?)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

John,
That sounds good. I have been there twice...before I was a rabid photog! I am shooting boxing on the evening on the 6th, so may be too tired, but if not would love to start meeting some of you guys.
Linda
