I always try to shoot in ISO 100. You have to give that up for 200 if you use HTP. Is it worth the loss of th 100 ISO?

Above should read "Is it worth the loss of the 100 ISO?"

What's your concern about it?

You're not actually "losing ISO 100". When you shoot at ISO 2oo (HTP), the sensor is set to ISO 100 while the metering and exposure are set for an exposure index of 200. As a result, the raw capture is approximately one stop lower than normal, giving one stop of additional "headroom" for highlights.

Does the reduced exposure mean that you get more noise in the shadows? Yes, and Canon is quite clear about it (see page 157 of the 40D manual).

Also correct me if I'm wrong but I've recently come across info suggesting that ISO 200 has a lower signal to noise ratio than ISO 100 particularly in the 30D and it may apply to other models as well.

In real world use though I'm of the opinion that it makes little difference whether you use 100 or 200 assuming you properly expose. Of course it helps to use 100 if your light is extremely bright and you have no room to slow down the shutter.

Very true about the noise in the shadows which is why I only use HTP when I need it.

I heard this same thing about the XT/XTi. Any proof or further insight?
