Primm,
If you didn't have a camera I would say get a 30D now but you do have one so I suggest you wait and get a 40D.
However either choice would be good :)

The 40D has improved autofocus, but except for that the 30D is a better camera and will take better pictures.

I use a Kodak Brownie

Well really difficult question.

The final decision is always on you, but let me confuse you little bit :-).

I would consider couple of factors here. If you're planning to shoot weddings (I understand that it's going to be your own wedding now) then 40D would be better thanks to faster focus and mainly thanks to higher resolution (Peter Gregg has done some cool research on this when he was comparing 30D with 400D, if you're interested go to www.abetterbouncecard.com (external link)) and really when you need to do a good crop which is usually needed in wedding photography, then higher resolution is always better. On the other hand camera itself doesn't take pictures. Many times lens is more important (don't want to say that body is not important at all) so maybe you could go for 30D and invest saved money to better lens. The other factor against 40D is the fact that it's pretty new - which means that is more expensive as it has been announced recently (later it will be definitely cheaper thanks to economies of scale) and I would be also afraid of those couple of errors that 40D is showing (e.g. above mentioned error and I've also read couple of posts where writers mentioned the problem in interaction with 70-200mm Canon L Lens).

To completely confuse you, I'm kind of perfectionist so I'm always trying to get the best in class equipment so in my case I was considering a DSLR purchase in the time when 300D was announced. Later when 350D was announced I noticed that 350D is improved and better camera but was still waiting for something better and suddenly 400D was announced which seemed to be great but I didn't like the size of the camera and grip so I finally decided to buy 30D because in all that period of time (while I was waiting for my first DSLR) I was able to save greater amount of money so I suddenly jumped to higher standard of DSLR and I can really say that I'm happy with it.

I believe I confused you totally, so all you need to do is just to pick those sentences from my post that most fit your situation and taste and then you're finally there - you have your decision.

Good luck

lukas

If you use AF, then by todays standards, the 30D is an inferior product.
When your kids are playing sports and the pictures are blurry you will understand.
You really should purchase it now, just incase the wedding photographers camera breaks.
After 30 years of marrage you learn to make the excuses creative:)

Honest opinon, get a used 30D and save for glass. The 30D is an awesome camera! You could easily get a 30D body and any number of great lens combos for less or equal to a 40D and the kit lens. Example 30D with the 17-40mm L.
