I'm doing a shoot in about a month and I was just wondering if there was a way to hook my 20D up to my laptop while shooting and have the photos displayed in real time...

I wanted to be able to shoot, have the files transfered to the laptop after the shot was taken, then I'd end up importing into LR, adjusting and printing.

It seems as though the cables that came with the camera get the photos on the laptop but not in real time. I usually just use CF cards but in this case it'd be much faster if it is possible to do what I proposed.

...so am I just asking for too much? or can it be done

Yes I think its called Remote Shooting, you can hook the 20D up to a laptop & control the camera via the laptop, have a look on the CD that came with the camera, or on the Canon website, there is software for this very task ;-)a

Edit: from the Canon website:

EOS Capture is software to control the camera from your computer

Thanks for the quick reply :)

I think my wording was a little off though

It's not that I want to actually controll the camera via the laptop (although that sounds really interesting) I just need the file to show up onto the laptop after the photo is taken, so that I can import it into lightroom after.

The software that nick mentioned will do just that.

You can find that the software will capture the shots to the camera, the card or both.

Capture to both. Good to have a backup. I shoot in the studio this way all the time, and even on location. I once had a CF card fail and went to the computer to get the images. Also sometimes the pictures don't get to the computer, but they're in the card.
