My 350d is starting to die, here are my problems:

Turns on and shows the "err 99"
Wont lock on focus continues to hunt, then will crash on the menu (even if I turn it off it still shows the menu) I have to take the battery out.

Does anyone know whats wrong with it? It occurs when any one of my lenses is attached.

Thanks for any help.

Liam.

Could be something as simple as a bad battery. You can't be sure unless you try a known good one.

Hi Liam

err99 as I am sure you know is a sort of "catch all" code that covers everything.

The fact that it is happening with any lens and then reverts back to the menu is obviously worrying.

Were I seeing the same I perhaps would do the only other thing an owner can do before sending it to the Canon 'doctor', try replacing the button cell backup battery. This may just possibly be indicated if when you say 'it crashes to the menu screen....' is that the one that invites you to set the date up?

Oh, have you tried with the CF card taken out/in ?

Hope that helps maybe? And that you can get sorted ASAP.

Hi thanks or the info,
whats the button cell backup battery?.
It sometimes crashes when ooking at photos sometimes when I am changing settings e.g. iso..

I have tried changing the battery but I will try it with a different cf card. I used the camera in rain last weekend, do you think that could be something to do with it.

thanks.

You say you used it in the rain.....mmmm, that could well be your problem and you may have damaged the circuits??

As far as the button battery, it's where you insert your main batter, you'll see a very small serated finger finger grip, but i think there's a little safety catch that ou have push in first to be able to remove it......??

The butten cell backup battery is accessed in main battery compartment - if you look (carefully) there is section of plastic marked something like CRxxxx (x = numbers) this I think is slide carrier and 'pulls' out. The manual I am sure mentions it.

As for the effect of rain, for sure it could cause any range of problems. Light drizzle and wiping regularly I have found on the one occassion I used it "wet" was OK but the 350D is not weather sealed so if you got it very wet i.e. water pooling on the top surface etc then water ingress is very likely and could damage the internals.
