1) : live view must be enabled in the menu (not a custom function, but a liveview settings) Then you press SET while shooting

2) What do you want the af-on to do? By defualt it is exactly the same as half-pressing the shutter.

3) Auto mode will automatically pop up the flash if the camera doesn't think there is enough light.

Lol, didn't know that.

Ranger, definitely use creative modes - you'll love learning.

Ranger, honestly, learn the camera.
In the end you'll be Tenfolds happier with your camera than if you didn't.

Leave auto for the point and shoot cameras ;)

Better to start off with Aperture Priority (Av) mode instead of Auto mode...you'd probably learn faster and it's a flexible yet quick mode to use. Also, if you desire to pursue the basics of photography, then have a read of my night photography tutorial. The link is in my signature.

Ranger - the best advice that has been given to you here is to learn the camera. When I first got into SLR I took a 40 hour course at a local college. It was a great experience and really allowed me the best possible experience with my SLR. With the explosion in DSLR sales it won't be hard to find a course somewhere, be it at a school, community center, camera store or on-line. You won't regret it.
