got my 40d but seem to have trouble...

If you're not comfortable with shooting in the creative zone (P, Tv, Av, M), there is the option to shoot without the flash in one of the Basic Zone (everything below the full-auto "Green Box") settings. This will remedy your pop-up flash problem. I think P or Program mode is the easiest for beginners just getting into using the creative zone settings.

As someone stated earlier, read your manual with camera in hand.

I never read any manuals in my life, but I read my first one for my XTi (and i read one yesterday for 40D). It was well worth it!
