She drops by and asks if I can take a photo for her in 10 mins. Sheesh!

Here it is, or at least one of them she liked. C&C welcome.

Yes the subdued color is on purpose.

White balance is definitely off. Here's a very quick edit. It still could use a bit more red.

Yes the subdued color is on purpose.

Why is that?

There is a blue cast which IMO isn't very flattering (it makes the skin look sickly). There is also a lot of noise and the crop is a little too tight. The lighting was pretty hard as well which isn't very flattering (there are a lot of hot points on her skin due to this). The good news however is that most of that can be fixed in Adobe Camera RAW 4.1+ very easily – that is, if it was shot in RAW. The mid-high key lighting however is a problem that cannot be easily fixed without serious PS editing. Thats just my opinion though.

The subdued color isn't for me in this instance. Maybe a black and white conversion would do nicely.

Well she wanted it for my space. They like things differently there. I liked the blue cast and reduced color. Here it is straight out of the camera. I failed to set flash WB. But it was in AWB.

Did she ask for the spots to be removed? Maybe that is why she wanted the subdued colour, maybe she thought it would hide the skin tones she didnt like?

Actually I removed the spots without her permission. She just asked for the spots back.

Unless my subject is a model asking for head shots I usually make three different edits of photo's of clients; one the way they asked, the second the way I like it and the third either retro or more pop culture (whatever is pop at the moment). 90% of the time they choose my version.
