Yeah, I meant prep ball.

I saw that Central did so well against them and was frankly surprised! I saw Central the week earlier against WWS and they were having execution problems. Thinking about seeing the huskies week 9 against WWS.

Thanks for looking!

Forgot to mention that those are some really nice shots with flash. I'm not use to using flash because in boxing/MMA it's not allowed except for after the fight so this will be different having to deal with a flash and battery pack.

Dennis- I keep hearing about flash on a monopod. Get you be more specific on how they are attaching this? Is it velcro, glue, or bungee cords?

Thanks Mike- I have a stroboframe, but was wondering how Dennis was getting it below camera to shoot up into the faces. (besides kneeling)

Flashes on a monopod
Pretty simple - use a superclamp 2 feet below the lens on the monopod and put the flash on the superclamp. you can either use the hot shoe extension if you want ETTL or use pocket wizzards. Both work fine

I'm new to photography...why is using a flash controversial?

Some people don't like the "look" of the photo's - they think they look, um, uh, too flashy...like any other photograph, the flash look is different than a naturally-lit shot.

Also, some people think the flash is distracting, although in more than 100 games I've never had a single athlete complain.

Actually, that's NOT my football rig. The one shown there was a one-off I did just for hockey this past weekend. The bracket doesn't get the flash high enough off the flash to be useful for football, but for hockey, since I was bouncing the flash, and since that bracket was easier to move from portrait to landscape orientation, it was better than my Stroboframe Pro-T.

My football rig looks like this (except I now have a 400 Vs. the 120-300, and yes, Kevin, it's THAT picture again).

yea I mean I understand not liking the flash look on the sidelines, because I don't, it causes a glare on their heads from sweat and such. However, the color from flash, for me has been great using one in HS football, I prefer and look of a sharp image over a blurry one.

So do you find you still get the red eye problem much when the flash is off to the side?

'diver - Actually, the flash is above the lens (the Stroboframe flips the flash to remain above the lens), not off to the side. Putting the flash on the side makes for some odd looking shadows.

Now that I'm shooting with a 400 f/2.8, I'm getting more red-eye than when I used to shoot with the 120-300 (the focal plane is farther out, which would require me to move the flash even higher), but red-eye is pretty easy to fix.

That's the problem I had last week Dennis. The field I shot is the darkest I shoot all season, so I had no choice but to use a flash. I was happy with the results but I did get a lot of red eye. I was using a 300 2.8 and a 580 mounted on a Custom Bracket (external link). The CB also rotates to keep the flash above the lens and I had it raised all the way up but I still got some red eye, but like you said it's easy to fix.
