This is a photo at a recent wedding i was in and took some shots as we were all hanging out. I need some help on how best to handle this kind of lighting. I used the rebel XT with a lightsphere and the 430ex, but as you can see, when i go to process this its either that the ocean behind her will be blown out or she will be totally underexposed. I am no master at lighting but any tips would be awesome. Thanks!

I would create three different exposures from the RAW file, merge them into a single photo, and start to paint in where it needs help.

Basically a lot more fill flash and/or a reflector (if you have an assistant) and a smaller apeture could have been used, or adjust the different areas in post work.

I had a quick bash at editing your photo to give you an idea of what more fill light could have achieved. CHEERS!

Editing welcome :D

Can you layer the BG and the bride separately and adjust that way?

I'm not sure this was successful but I tried to cut down on the background glare and bring her face out a bit more.

That is what I was thinking...You could create a new layer, select the background and adjust the exposure/brightness etc...You could then select the inverse and adjust her accordingly.

Just my thoughts.

Get rid of the Fongware when you're outdoors. It takes a lot of flash to compete with the sun, and even more to compete with an extremely bright background like this. Direct flash is the only thing that works in that situation.

I'm not too put off by the original, nice shot in it's own right. How did you expose the shot? Not having been in that situation yet I think I would have underexposed by 2/3 stop (maybe a full stop) and used fill flash to get her to pop. Having a white dress...does that not work as well?

Anyway, did a quick edit myself.. duped layer, levels adjustment for water, layer mask paint out bride, merge, duped layer, shadow/highlight adjustment for the bride, layer mask to reveal brides skin.

A lot of white on the subject will affect the E-TTL metering an usually you'll need some +FEC to compensate. But I agree that shot should look pretty nice in print.

Here's my go at it; made multiple layers to adjust levels and curves and added a blue photo filter to the sea.
