Is the 40D going to replace a camera? What camera is this one closest to? What is the cost? I'm looking to replace my XTi and think this one might be a good upgrade. Is is full frame?

the 40D is the successor to the 30D.
Most stores have taken the 30D off the shelves already.
No, it is not full frame.

what is your reason for moving from your XTi?

Switched to the "dark side" but I like these boards.

I just have some extra money and wanted to buy some camera gear. I think I will go for more glass instead.

Probably the best idea unless you find that the XTi can't do something that the 40D will do.

You have to ask yourself, what is the problem with your XTi, what isnt it doing that you want it to do.

The 40D wont give you any major improvements in IQ & just because a new camera is released doesnt automatically mean you HAVE to upgrade, you would be better off buying some better lenses.

IF you have any ideas about going full frame, better to buy EF lenses from now on just incase.

Just noticed your using the kit lens, this could be the reason why your not content, I found it pretty poor to use & the optics werent stunning.

If your using the 18-55 a lot then consider something better, you will be amazed at how much more sharper the images are from a better lens, even if you stop down that kit lens its never that sharp, or at least my copy wasnt.

Mine seems to be pretty sharp all in all (surprisingly so, actually, though it's certainly not as good as my 24-105L), so there may be a lot of variation here. That's not surprising for such a cheap lens.

I'm in full agreement with Nick_C here. You might want to do a sharpness test first, followed by a depth of field test (using the focus chart found here: http://focustestchart.com/chart.html (external link)). Do the same tests with the 70-200. If pics with the kit lens are soft (particularly towards the center) while those from the 70-200 are sharp then your kit lens is probably a bad copy.

Good advice from all. I think I'll stick with the XT-i and get some better lenses. The ones that I have my eye on are the 24-70 2.8L, the 16-35L and the 24-105, not necessarily in that order. Thanks for the focus chart website.
