Thanks guys....the squirt has some goofy knees. Maybe dislocated is the wrong term...but it essentially falls apart if she lands wrong...the knee cap slides to one side and the whole knee just pops a part...I have had to personally "snap' her knee cap back in place a couple of times.....it is not a pretty picture (pun intended ) It looks and sounds extremely painful...been to numerous specialists an no real answers yet.

She thinks she will miss this weekend and be back next...? These are tough little squirts I tell you.

Just a quick update.....we are back from the Knee God Specialist (KGS for short ) ..... Nothing torn. I was certain it was an PCL or MCL tear, but they are just stretched and sore.

Brace is being developed for gymnastics and physical therapy starts on Tuesday. She asked KGS if she could compete on Sunday.......I beat him to the answer

Funny in that he said her knee cap was larger than the slot it rides in and expects her to grow somewhat to have everything come into balance...considering she is 4 foot nothin' anything that suggest additional height is a welcome thing for her....

January competition looks feasible though and she is relieved and excited.

Good News Randy! Hope she recovers nicely and is ready to go in January.

...I shot these at f 1.8, 1/320, iso 1600 in manual mode. As you can see by the first image, I was shooting at +1/3 EV. I had to laugh at those with the P&S and camera phones trying to take pictures in this gym. I would love to just peek and see what they actually got.

Thanks for posting up these images. This almost exactly what I have been struggling with.

This Saturday's meet is in a new-to-me gym. Hopefully it will be better lit than our "cave".

Rich: Can you send me a couple of the RAW images you shot from your last event? I want to try and correct the WB & noise and the small posted Jpegs just won't cut it....My e-mail is pretty generous so fear not...or if you post them on a site, I can just FTP them down.

Guy's. I'd like your opinion / guidance. I shot my nephew's event and I had some focussing issues. This is with my 135L which I know is an accurate focussing lens. I was using Servo in my 30D center point. It looks to me like focus was a little behind the target. Any idea how to avoid this?

This image is cropped a little....so the fact that he is not centered is probably not the issue (or at least not the super obvious one).

We commute 50-60 minutes each way every day. My daughter takes 1/2 her classes in the local public school and 1/2 home schooled to make it work. Has been doing this for 3 years. There are 4 other girls commuting between 1 - 2 hours each way for our gym. It can work, but the girls have to be committed. and use that commute time to study. It can work out. Either way, buy by the elite gym or travel, I know it work out for you.

Fug, I see what you mean. I couldn't do much with the second image...

I've never heard of a student doing a 1/2 and 1/2 school program. That sounds like a great idea! What grade is your daughter in?

Randy, great news about the knee. Sounds like she's bouncing right back.

Darrell, Sarah is in 9th grade. She's been doing this since 1/2 school 1/2 home school since 6th grade.

Great news Randy! i'm sure glad your monkey will soon be back in competition.

Thanks for the schooling idea. That type of school schedule would make travel a lot easier. I just need to research the details of how to do it and meet the legal requirements in our state. I've often considered full time home schooling, but 1/2 and 1/2 would work better for us. Just didn't realize it was possible.

Personally, I seem to get better results using one shot AF on the 30D, unless the subject is coming right at me. I have tried AI Servo several times but always seem to go back to one shot. Not sure if it would help you, but it works for me.

I set my * to AF. Then when I achieve focus I take my finger off the button and shoot away. This seems to work well for me for bar routines, since the athlete seems to stay in the same general plane when shooting from that angle.

Here are my latest attempts. EXIF is intact, shot in raw and converted with DPP.

I am not happy with the focus, sharpness and DOF, the pictures seemed better as a raw image.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Welcome to the world of fast action photography. You just missed the focus on these. Look at the second, the girl in the green leo is where the focus is locked. Are you using single point focus? If not, try. If so, try harder You will have your share of near misses just like the rest of us.

This looks like a DOF issue to me. The sharpest part of the image is the top corner of the red bar on the left. It just appears to be another near miss.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. As it turns out, my 135L has gone out of calibration and is missing big time. Check this quick test out (100% crop). I focussed on the little tree on the right. The shrub to the far left is 4 feet behind it. Dang.

The good news is I'm not as bad a duffer as I feared. The bad news is I wasted that shoot due to a lens issue.
