Hey gang,

Tonight is another night and I return to the gym hopeful. I shot about 200 images today and got a better feel for how the camera focus adjusts in AI servo and at times in low light it seemed there was not enough light to get it to refocus. I will try to focus on the lighter skin or white parts of the leotards to see if this helps.

Post your results, good or bad. I think some of us take a good amount of pleasure pulling noobs up the learning curve and as randy said, you are almost there.

I have set up a new website for my for-sale pictures. You can see it here:

http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/store.aspx?p=52809 (external link)

I am interested in hearing your assessment of Express Digital if you have looked into it. There is a software program called ED Darkroom web edition that shows a great deal of promise. The program woks with raw files with no conversion. It creates a low resolution proxy of the original and that is what you work with directly. I have to say that some of the tools within the program are very very good. There is a downfall that will keep me working with my current tools, no noise reduction. I will not even post the OOC proofs until I work the noise out.

The program gives you the ability to build event catalogs and then associated them with "package groups" that can contain LOTS of things from third party labs like mouse pads, cups, key rings, framed images, t shirts, collages, etc.. These things get the parent purchasing a lot more and a lot more often. I offered up 8x10 4 picture collages to the team parents for $99 and almost all of them bought one. You can see those here:

http://public.fotki.com/fugfuggy/gymnastics/collages/ (external link)

These were all done manually but I can see how to automate this with the new program.

The best thing of all, it is FREE. They just take a 15% commission on all sales.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Fug, I've been going back and forth about Express Digital. I wound up staying with Exposure Manager and using DPP (Canon proprietary SW) and PS to process my images. I create a basic image for exposure manager with limited editing and when I get an order, I take the time to manipulate the image.

Great news that you can get $99 for those collages. Going rate for something like that here at meets is $50 or so.

Hi folks,

Just discovered this gymnastics shooting thread today. I've skimmed it over and will definitely go back and read it carefully in its entirety.
I'm so glad to have found others who face the same shooting challenges.

Here's a shot of my daughter from the Big Apple Classic (NY) last weekend. Level 5. She won the AA for her age, and in the individuals got 2 firsts, a second, and a fourth. A good day.

MkIII, 135, ISO 1600, 1/400 at 2.2, manual exposure, manual focus, AWB, raw.

This particular gym has the worst lighting of any gym on our NY area circuit, using spot lighting (rather than floodlighting) causing starkly contrasting areas of lightness and darkness.

Our next meet is at a gym with pretty decent lighting, so I'm looking forward to that one. I also hope to have a fully repaired MkIII by then as well. (fingers crossed)

Thanks for the welcome, Randy.
Expert and my name are rarely mentioned together in photographic circles, and for good reason. :)
I'm hoping to pick up some nice shooting tips from the participants in this thread.

Did you happen to see in that other place how the two of us got compared to Dave Black with respect to gymnastics shooting? I wasn't going to touch that one with a 100 foot pole. No way. But I will say here that Dave Black is fortunate not to have to shoot in the dungeons we frequent.

Hope your daughter heals quickly.

Welcome to the group! That is a very nice shot. How old is your little one? She looks to be an "older" level 5.

Keep posting.

me too! Do tell! Out of the millions of gymnastics parents out there it is hard to believe that the biggest online forum is contained within our little group.

Sorry, guys. My reference was to the Nikon Cafe. Randy and I are long-time Nikon shooters who started using Canon because Nikon's offerings in the high ISO area were inadequate.

Rich,

Thanks.

My daughter started gymnastics two years ago at the extremely old (gymnastics) age of 9. I guess things aren't too serious here in NY as there are a fair number of older level 5's. She's having a ton of fun and is in incredible shape, so that's fine by us.

Here in the sunshine state you do not see that many level 5's over the age of 10. Sometimes there are only 2-3 at a competition and they win medals just for showing up. Conversely, there are so many 8 year old 5's that they divide them up into groups a b c based on their birthday. It is not unusual to have 30+ girls in one session. Getting a medal in those groups is sometimes hard to come by.

We just met Glenn so I will give up my dirty little secret up front. I am the sole Nikonian on this site and I will put my images against anybody's.:razz::razz::razz::razz::razz::razz:
