This meet was at a former Sam's Club that now acts as the civic center for a very small community. Picture a completely gutted Sam's club with nothing but I-Beam pillars. Black ceiling. Tungsten lights all over the place. To layout the competition area the took police tape "Do Not Cross" and tied it between the I-Beams. Lecture hall chairs for seating.

All at 1/1600, 100 F2 lens. Mostly F2 shots. Foot zoom. No noise reduction applied.

One important lesson learned: if there is a lot of overhead lighting that is going to be in the field of view or just out of it, remove your UV filter or be ready for flair.

For some reason, I'm a sucker for these national anthem shots. I get one at every meet.

My chica warming up on beam. Because of a double ankle sprain suffered the week of the meet, she only competed bars, but did warm up beam...

And bars... You can clearly see the flair/ghosts caused by the filter.

And the same image with NR.

That's a very good tip - always remove the UV or protective filter. Even the best ones will introduce flare, despite the best multi coatings.

With the larger telephoto Canon lenses, you will always notice (on the newer ones) that the front lens is curved to prevent the flaring. The new 200/2.0L EF IS is like this also as well as their flagship 300 2.8L EF IS. And they purposely make NO provisions for a front mounted filter.

Very nice shot PM01. My goal is to be able to take shots that good when my level 6 has worked her way up to those skills.

I like the National Anthem shots too. This is my favorite. It's a terrible shot, but I love the blond moment.:)

Ouch....

Figured I would add a couple of my recent images;

From our home gym, where I have the lighting and angles figured out. Shot in jpeg, 1/400ss, f2.8, minimal noise reduction

IMAGE: http://jeremyd.smugmug.com/photos/463317940_6Ag9u-L.jpg

From the away meet this week. Some sort of bizarre lighting scheme. I should have put my camera away and chatted with the parents instead of continuing to shoot.

Shot RAW, custom white balance, 1/250, f2.2, 135mm lens, heavy noise reduction

C&C welcome
