For the first time I shot with 2 cameras and now I need to figure out how to sort the files in lightroom. I matched the date and times of each camera but I can't find a "sort by time" option in lightroom. Also, light room as renamed the duplicate file names by adding a "-2" behind the name.

How on earth do some of you sort the files by time and how do you dealing with the naming of files?

I used downloader pro to download my images off my cards, it automatically puts the camera serial number or other identifying character on the filename.
I then use breesebrowser to sort and rename my files by timestamp. I then use pixort to cull out the bad images super fast. And THEN reload the "good" files back into breesebrowswer to rename again. And then FINALLY into Lightroom, seems like a lot of steps, but really it works extremely well.

I sync both cameras before the shoot. Then I sort by capture time.

Mrs Opie,

Lightroom does have sort by captured time.
If you synched your camera before taking picture, it can sort it based on captured time nicely.
I think you have to be in 'Library' module and select all. and just sort based on capture time.

I use Stamp. It's awesome.

I use it to download the files right off the card. You specify the destination folder. If it doesn't exist, it'll create the folder for you. You specify exactly how it is named. For example, I name my files by time and then image number... so a file IMG_8763.JPG taken at 3:45:23 becomes 154523_8763.jpg. This way there is almost NO chance of overlapping file names. In the case that there is, Stamp is smart enough to add a serial number to the end so it won't overwrite.

Then import the set into lightroom and you can cull from there, or pre cull using something like pixort and then import. Because the filename is the time, you can sort by filename in lightroom. This comes in really handy when you start stacking files and creating TIFF or PSD files, because by default, it sorts by import time so it puts all your CS2/CS3 edited files to the end of the list, which sucks.

You can get Stamp here: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/stamp.html (external link)
best part is that it is FREEWARE! If you try it out and want help setting it up, let me know. I'd be happy to help.

Ditto for us through these stages ..and probably the best thing of all is that once you've set up Downloader Pro to recognise and rename based on serial numbers, the files rename automatically the moment you put a card in without any intervention, and it's impossible to overwrite files from multiple cameras - so there's no room for user-error ...making it idiot proof for backing up cards under pressure at a busy wedding.

I use the simple Canon software, camera window, it puts em all into a folder.

Then I simply go into lightroom and import the lot. Then hit sort by capture time. Tada!
