Walking around with camera on ... bad for it?

I leave my camera on as well. I find it easier to do that way and it doesnt use much battery power. I findit similar to driving a car... the interstate is easier because (typically) its a constant speed, rather than the stop and go in town. By turning on and off your camera repeatedly I would think the switch is more bound to wear out.

I think what the OP is referring to is "Zoom Creep" - when a zoom lens creeps from one zoom extreme to the other due to slight jarring downwards movements when walking. I know this used to happen with my 55-200 (I soon figured out why, it was a c**p lens) and can easily happen with Push-Pull lenses like the 100-400

No, I don't think so. On my 70-300 IS lens, I can "lock" it so that it doesn't zoom (slide) in and out at all.

sometimes you'll hear a small clink or thud when jotting the camera around. this is normal.

Nah, there is no sound at all. It is hard to describe...it feels like a "heavy" sliding of something back and forth.

I think what you feel/sense moving around is that anti-dust shake system.

As per my previous reply, I hope the sensor cleaning mechanism isn't that big (meaning heavy-feeling).

Does your chauffeur set up your tripod, configure your aperture and shutter speed, focus your camera, and all you do is press the shutter?

they probably softened it up in the 40d. on the xt it's noticeable, on the mkiii it's not noticeable at all. it's exactly what i was talking about though

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

It turns out not to be the camera. When I take the lens off, this heaving "sliding" feel goes away. It comes back when I put my lens back on. It also happens with my other lens, and they are both Canon EF IS lenses.

Maybe it's the part the does the IS?
