i believe this is some type of mantis?

anyway, this is the first time i saw one, he ran off in a hurry, i couldn't get any crazy shots. As i was walking down the hill i saw a bluejay trying to eat it, then it flapped its wings and the bluejay flew off. I tried to take photos of the 'jay, but no luck, instead, got some pictures of his meal attempt.

Lovely series- think #2 is a fairly unique shot - that's a big mantis.

Very nice shots.

#2 is excellent. You can see the mantis thinking 'Just a little closer... come on...' :D

Lovely detail on the crane fly.

Good series, how big was the Mantis? It looks huge! That fly in #2 is one cheeky fly, and gave me a good chuckle. The look on the mantid's face is a classic.

thanks guys for the replies

@ the comments about the mantis, it was quite huge, at first i thought it was a pile of leaves! I think (from memory and rough guess) it was approximately 4-5 inches, or 11 cm. I'm still surprised i saw one, they are very very rare here in Canada.
