Great capture with him yawning, but I think you missed ur focus point just a bit. Those fangs look devistating.

My hands would be shaking too if I was shooting lions. Do you use an IS lens? I won't use anything but IS, the images are mostly always sharp. My friend has a non-IS L series lens and he just pumps up the ISO, but I can see the difference. And there is alot of noise in most of his shots...steve

steve,

Thanks for your comment.
I do have an IS lens (70-300 IS), and I believe I had the IS turned on. I don't know whether the softness came from out-of-focus, or the softness of the lens @ 300mm. I notice I experience less focusing problem at shorter FL's.
EXIF: 1/100 s, f/5.6, ISO 200, @300mm.

Don't forget IS does nothing if the lion is moving about while your shooting. Only a faster shutter speed will freeze movement.

I had that lens and it took fantastic pictures at all focal lengths. I sold it to buy the 70-200mm 2.8 IS. I miss the old lens sometime when I need a longer reach. I use the 1.4x and that helps some. Did you know that the 70-300 had a recall last year sometime for vertical shot problems. I didn't see any problems with mine, but I sent it in and canon replace all the insides for free. I did this before selling it and my friend got a brand new lens from me. Check with canon about the recall, they have a list of the serial numbers that might be defective. Then again if you bought the lens in the last 1 1/2 years there should be no defect as they corrected the problem. steve

Steve, thanks for the info.
I bought the lens about 4 months ago, but I will check with Canon anyway.
It was probably just me not focusing correctly, or I got the shutter speed too slow.

skylab, thanks for your comment.
