Hi, I am a little confused by the power switch dial. How does the last dial "--" differ from On? I referred to the manual but I couldn't quite understand what it was saying. Can any one please enlighten me?

Thank you,

Jack

I'm guessing that it's the same as the 30D - The first position after "off" enables everything, but locks out the main dial on the back, so, for example, exposure compensation cannot accidentally be changed. The second "on" position enables the main dial.

It is a little confusing, but just to confirm as another 40D owner, xarqi is right - that extra option on the on/off/--' switch enables the large dial on the back of the body.
