Had my 10D converted by Lifepixel and received it yesterday. I didn't realize that they had set the custom white balance, and went ahead on my own with trying to set it up. Took a bunch of pictures of grass, set the white balance, but didn't get the results that I was expecting. Maybe someone can answer a few questions for me:

1.) When taking the pictures of the grass or other foliage, can the camera WB be set to AWB?

2.) I've heard about exposure compensation of anywhere from -1.1/2 to -2. When does this come in...when taking the original pics of the foliage or afterwards in PP, followed by saving the file and using this for the custom white balance?

3.) Will the custom white balance ever need to be changed from outing to outing?

If someone can post a workflow for achieving the custom white balance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I recently got my 10D converted by Lifepixel as well.

It doesn't matter what WB setting you use when you take the picture of the grass. (Be sure to blur it.) Then set a custom white balance using this shot. You'll still get a slightly reddish image but not anywhere near what you'd get if you didn't set the WB.

I haven't used exposure compensation yet in IR but be sure to check your histogram both in taking your grass shot and in subsequent shots.

Make sure that when you take the pic of the grass to set custom WB that it is a sunny hot afternoon..
You want the grass to be pumped full of IR heat...

Seriously, you won't be able to get the CWB in winter.

As for EC, I suppose it will vary considerably from one camera model to another, and from one IR filter to another, but I find I need to dial in 1&2/3 stops of plu EC to start with on my D60

Thanks everyone for the tips...I hadn't given the temp/time of day a thought, but now I see how it applies. Looks like it'll be a trial and error period with the CWB and any EC if needed.

This was my first attempt after setting the custom white balance. It was shot in RAW with a 17-40L on the 10D. Original shot was at 0 EC. Once in Photoshop, I played with the exposure a bit and settled on +1-1/3 stops EC. Also played with channel mixer to get the blue sky, but no dice (at least compared to others that I've seen). If anyone can shed some light on doing that, I'd appreciate it. My extent at channel mixer was +100 blue/0 red on the red channel, and +100red/0 blue on the blue channel.
