Does anyone know how this camera compares to the 1Ds MKIII? I've heard rumors about the new Nikons and how they will compete against Canon's 1Ds series. Can anyone provide some details on this topic? Thanks!

No real-life images to show yet, so no real comparisons can be made.

And if you are thinking of getting a D3, have fun. If they handle this like their other popular releases, you'll be waiting a year before you can even get one in your hands.

It's hard to make comparisons between two cameras that haven't been released yet. :)

I think there is supposed to be a new Noink to be released next year that competes directly with the 1Ds series. But then, as mentioned above, it could be announced in 2008 and released in 2010.
The D3's main competitor is the 1D series, not the 1Ds, FF or not.

I have seen some side by side photos from these two cameras. My conclusions:

1. 1D Mk III has lower noise when viewed at 100%. But keep in mind that D3 photo has 12MP so that when printed to the same size paper, the difference in noise should be comparable.

2. D3 photo is sharper. This should be expected because D3 is a full frame camera with lower pixel density.

I remember in a press conference, Nikon showed two large photos taken by these two cameras at ISO 6400, and claimed they look similar. I have not seen those photos but believe what Nikon said.

Now my analyses. Nikon D3 noise is comparable to 1D Mk III. Keep in mind that the sensor on D3 is 70% larger than that on 1D Mk III. What this means is that Canon's full frame camera should perform at least 70% better than D3 (talking about the printed photo, not pixel). In other words, 1Ds Mk III and the future 5D Mk II should produce cleaner high ISO photos.

Canon 1D Mk III/5D2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX, Canon 85/1.8, Canon 100/2.8 IS macro, Canon 135/2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Canon 500 f/4 IS

D3 is for photojournalism,sports, birding..
1Ds is for studio work.

Neither camera has been released.

But there are sample photos from each on the respective manufactires website.

Each are posted as examples of what the camera is capable of so they are processed images not SOOC.

After viewing them I think the D3 is better than any nikon digital ever made.

But at native ISOs I still think canons are capable of more detail. Even comparing 40D shots to the D3, I see better detail in the canon shots.

HIgh ISO noise is much better on the D3 than any other nikon(but my opinion is canon still has the advantage in this area), but the 1D Mk III still holds more detail at identical ISOs. So Im guessing the 1Ds3 will be about the same or even better than the 1D3 at high ISO.

Go view the images for your self and come to your own conclusions, in the end thts all that matters.

Your comparing 12 MP to 21 MP there should be a big differnece in resoultion in favour of the canon. I would expect Nikon to have lower noise. You are really comparing two different cameras. A better comparison would be the MK III or the 5D vs the D3

I've shot with the 1Ds Mk.III and didn't see a big difference over my 1Ds Mk.II. Noise seemed the same but I'm sure if I had a RAW file to use then I'd change my tune. Jpeg to Jpeg - no difference other than size.

Put a Nike-yawn in my hands and I'll compare for ya. My gut feeling? No comparision. Canon hands down.

Full frame and some primes.

Noone is going to know anything until the Nikon D3 and D300 hit the streets. Right now most of what we're hearing and the talk in the Nikon forums is all speculation. A few people have had the privelige of trying these cameras but other than the initial feeling of being impressed they did not get a chance to test or compare in any way.

I'm sure the first week that people own both of these camera's we'll get all the buzz just as we did when the Mk III and 40D were released. Even the Nikon people are skeptical as to whether both cameras will live up to the hype.

I agree with Adam. The D3 is more of a competitor to the 1D than the 1Ds. The only spec that can compare with the 1Ds is the FF aspect. Other than that, its specs are closer the 1D. I assume that there will be a D3x in the near future that will compete with the 1Ds.

Ah... did not see that little "s".

Well, assuming 1Ds Mk III's sensor is as efficient as 1D Mk III's, 1Ds Mk III should perform about 70% better at high ISO when the photo is printed out in the same size paper.

From brief examination of the images Canon wins hands down. D3 was disappointing.

LOL..... <sigh>

To the OP:
Undersatand that you are asking these questions in a canon forum and inheritly you will receive some fanboy answers, just as you would if you asked this question at a nikon forum.
