Canon Warranty question

I have a dumb question!

I just purchased a "used" 40D from someone who decided to keep their 5D instead.

I'm sure the warranty card hasn't been filled out, but do I have to do anything in order for the warranty to be "transferred" to me or do I just need the card? Should I fill out the warranty card? I don't really understand how this works.

You'll likely need proof of purchase... i.e. the receipt, along with the warranty card. That's what I had to provide when I took something in.

Is this true? Do I need to ask the original owner for the receipt?

Make that "the original" proof of purchase, not the purchase receipt you got from your "someone". I'm not sure that Canon will honour the warranty other than from the original purchaser, so you might need to be a little clever if you ever need to call on it (change your name?) .

Canon at times does give a little... I have a lens I bought from B&H that was import (I did this accidentally, clicked on the wrong thing). Later I needed to send it in and they worked on it even though it was not USA warranty. If something happens to your camera in the first year just send it in with the unfilled warranty card and you should have no issues.

Thanks, this makes me feel a little better. I've never had to send anything in under warranty, but if I need to its nice to know that the service will be covered under the warranty.

Yes, I guess I should say another $1,100 lens was sent with it. Maybe they thought that I was an alright kinda guy? :)
