Hi all,
i've decided to upgrade from my 350D.
During the year my photos are about 80% macros and 20% landscapes. I have those configuration in mind:

5D + 24-105L (or 5D mkII if it comes out form now to december)
40D + Mpe-65

Now my configuration is the one in the signature..

Post your opinion!!

If you love Macros, get the 5D and the MPE. I think that's about the best macro combo out there.

I'm a huge fan of the 5d and I haven't played with the 40d yet so my opinion doesn't carry much weight. I actually think that if you like macro shooting, that the crop factor on the 40d will work to your advantage more than the full frame 5d. You shouldn't have to crop as much. Also I have heard great things about that lens that you have paired up with the 40d. People say that there is a learning curve with that lens, but it magnifies very well.

The crop factor isn't too much of an issue with the MPE, because you'll just be shooting at higher mag. You usually won't go much beyond 2.5x-3x mag on a crop camera, so you can go to 3x-4x on a FF and make up the crop difference.

You're right about the learning curve though. It's tough to get used to.

Another big help with the 40D is the ability to use Live View and zoom in at 10x to get the focus just right. If your budget only allows for those configurations, I would go with the 40D and the MPE. The MPE is the best out there once you know how to use it.

checking prices at B+H, the 5D w24-105L is more expensive then a 5D w/an MPE-65 by about $100. Id get the 5D w/the MPE 65, sell the Canon 100 Macro and pick up a Tamron 28-75 2.8, should give you a Phenominal macro lens, and a pretty good lens for portraits and its just about as wide as the 18-55 is on the 350D, so it should work for landscapes as well. Or sell the 350D and 100 Macro and pick up a 17-40L.

I do think the 40D might work better for Macro with the Live View feature and the MPE being Manual Focus Only. One option would be get the 40D, MPE 65 and 10-22, then maybe something to pickup up something to cover the gap between 22 and 70 (Sigma 24-70 perhaps)

5D - $2499
5D w/24-105 - $3400
5D w/MPE 65 - $3328
5D w/MPE 65 and the Tammy - $3697

40D - $1299
40D w/MPE, 24-70, 10-22 - $3246

Heck, you could even replace the Sigma with a Ring Flash. Or add a ringflash and be about the same as the 5D with MPE and Tammy.

Honestly, Id lean more towards the 40D, but you will need a flash with the MPE 65

prices are from BH

For the flash i've got the 580ex..no problem..in Italy prices are a bit different:

5D + 24-105 2960 euros
5D body 2390 euros + Mpe-65 980 euros = 3370 euros

40D body 1130 euros + Mp3-65 980 euros = 2110 euros

Bye!

Wow, 2960 Euros is $4195 US, Buy a plane ticket and fly to BH!

what about ordering from the US (or Kerso here on the forums) might be able to save some cash and get some more gear.

Why not the 5D plus the 100mm macro? You can add a set of extension tubes later. That will get you going in the macro world and give you a nice short telephoto for general use.

Get the 40D and the MP-E. The 5D is a good camera but I think you should work on your selection of glass.
