PocketWizard Plus II and Speedlight 580EX II

Hello All,

I know this sounds like a simple question that's probably been asked a hundred times over, but I couldn't find a direct answer.

I have a 580EXII and want to wirelessly take it off the camera. I've read (and heard) lots of good things about the PocketWizard Plus II.

Will the 580 work with the Plus II? What cable (if any) would I need to buy to connect the Plus II and the 580?

The PW comes with a standard PC to mini plug sync that will connect to the 580 EX II. You can also use a ScrewLock PC plug sync cord for a screwed in more secure fit, although these do cost a bit more.

I have a canon 580exII. The cable that is included with the Pocket Wizzard Plus II will fit your flash. You will need a second Pocket Wizzard for the camera in order to fire the flash wirelessly. good luck

Can someone confirm that when a 580EXII is triggered via PWII or PC cable... if it the 580EXII is set to master, that it will still control a wireless slave (430EX) so long as the 430 is within IR range of the master?

I know I lose E-TTL but this will work in manual mode right?

The PC port on the Canon 580EX II is turned off in Manual - Master mode.

This annoying attribute has been discussed in more than one thread.

If you want Manual - Master function you will need to use a hotshoe adapter.

WOW, really? So I ordered some stuff today, a light stand, umbrellas, and a male-to-male PC cable... but it won't fire my 580EX-II in manual mode. Upsetting.

But I'm a bit confused as the OP was told that the Pocket Wizard with it's included cable (that connects to the flash via PC port) will fire his flash.

How does the PW fire the flash through the PC port? It's gotta be manual because the PW doesn't support E-TTL.

EDIT: Nevermind... I just re-read and it will work in Manual mode, just not Manual + Master. Still upsetting, but clear. Thanks! So I will learn with one flash in manual mode via PC cable... and then as my skills improve, I will get a wireless setup to control two flashes.

Yes, it is specifically Manual - Master mode as I indicated above.

Yes, a corded solution is the best way to go when you are starting out. If you gravitate to Pocket Wizards later the cord can be your backup.

I have been able to mod the 580 EX II to successfully allow the PC port or an aux sync jack to operate in the Manual Master mode. It is then operational as a 2-way port in all modes.

If you don't want to have someone (like me) do the mod for you, then you are left to using a hot shoe adapter as supplied by FlashZebra, myself, ParamountCords, or places like B&H that sell the ParamountCords line of cables.

Hotshoe adapter, along with proper cables to attach via screwlock to my Canon SLR's screwlock PC port ordered. Thank you for your help and solution.

This thread was recommended to me in a discussion on Pocket Wizard Plus IIs. I'm a new member of your forum, and am glad I found this place as wireless connections for 580EX IIs seem extraordinarily complicated to figure out.

Am I correct in thinking that if I buy a set of 2 Pocket Wizard Plus II Transceivers I will be able to trigger my 580EX II off my camera's hotshoe and on a lightstand?

I bought my PW's used, do any of you have a picture of the cable you are referring to that you could please post? Thanks!
