I know I haven't nailed this but I'd like to know if this shape of back is common in ants? To me it looks like bits of body armour.
The wasp was on a citrus tree so I presume it was looking for aphids or White Fly to either eat or lay eggs in. I'm hoping someone will enlighten me.
