Hey all
I haven't posted much in Macro lately, Anyway I was out in the garden trying out my new home made soft box.
Very pleased with the results. Background is dark as the sun had set and the flash wasn't illuminating any background.

CC welcome

OK Just found out that this is part of the Subfamily Campopleginae if anyone is interested.

Lens used was the canon FD 50mm Direct reversed to camera body.

Lovely series of shots- a handsome looking Ichneumon :).
Diffuser looks good- you know you are onto something when there is very little shadow under the bug :)

Thanks Brian
yeah I have been experimenting with different ideas and designs, this second version of the soft box is still a tad too big but it is pretty light, so there is not much additional weight added to the 580EX flash.
I'm Toying with a third design right now.

Thanks for viewing and commenting Brian, it is greatly appreciated getting feed back from the master.

Nice series.

I like #2. The upheld wings add a bit of action to the shot.

Looks good to me, especially #1 which I think is the best image of the series. I wish I could get my lighting this good, but no matter what I try it just isn't happening :(

Lovely set. Great lighting. Think #2 is best with wings up.

Bernie(Dreamline)
thanks for the comments, I like the upheld wings also, it is amazing how short the wings are.
The wind was blowing really good when I took these shots, a storm was moving through when I spotted this little guy sitting on one of the leaves to the Banana plant, ambient light was dropping fast as the sun had set and with the storm moving in from the SW, soon darkened the sky making it difficult to focus through the viewfinder, Only managed to get five shots of this guy.
Then when the winds picked up to strong gusts (so did the Wasps wings at this point and I actually thought it was going to fly off) and it started to rain, the wasp decided to hide underneath the leaf, that was it photoshoot was over until another time.

Dave (Dpastern)
Well my lighting I have been fighting with for quite a while, not to mention the Delta flash bracket has been driving me up the wall lately, anyway I have a sto fen on my 580 EX and then I made a soft box/diffuser and I have Velum to help diffuse the light some more.
Both versions of my Softbox are made out of that foam cardboard, (about 4mm thick) I'll post some pics tomorrow as I am out of town right now.
but like I was saying to Brian (LordV) I am thinking of making a third version as both versions I have now are quite big and add alot of extra stuff to the front of the flash, you'll see what I mean when you see the pics of the diffusers.

Joan (Photogirl2007)
Thank you for the kind compliments. I'll try and get some more over the weekend, I'm very happy with the way these turned out.

Gordon (Actionman)
Yes sir you can see the diffuser, I'll post the pics tomorrow evening, I don't want to hear any laughing though .;)

Brian (skylab)
Yeah I like # 2 also (see above) I wish I had got more like this.
I think I'll use my 28mm direct reversed over the weekend and see if I can find me another wasp.

Toby (Racketman)
Thanks for viewing and commenting Toby, it's greatly appreciated
I'm hoping I can find this wasp on the Banana tree again as that was a perfect surface for this shoot.

Nice shots Sam, it's a slim critter for sure. Makes you wonder how far it runs before it needs refueling.

Ok here are a few pics of the diffusers I made.

Version 2 is the the one I used for the Ichneumon shots above.

Version 2

Version 2 with StoFen fitted this is just a friction fit, where as Version one is just cardboard for the flash attachment and requires a rubber band to secure it to the flash head.

Also notice on this shot the thickness of the foam cardboard used and how I have mitred the Corners.
