Just a fly on my Garden Fence

Hey All
here is a couple of pics of a large fly I spotted on my Garden fence whilst out using my DIY Soft box, the fence panel is 6ft tall so I was on tip toes for these.

Good capture. Nice and sharp. It almost looks like a bee or wasp in the body and the placemnt of the wings.

Thanks Brian & Jack I am really impressed with this quality in this FD lens and to think I almost sold the 50mm and the 28mm as I no longer use my Canon A1.
I'm sure when I decide to get the Canon 100 Macro that will all change.
I wish the background was a little bit brighter to help contrast the fly but oh well light was fading really fast, these were taken just before the Ichneumon Wasp.

Was he up high Allan? looks like you had to stretch to take these you got your prize though.

Yeah he was on top of my Fence, which is 6ft tall, I'm 5ft 11 so I had to tip toe for these.

awesome pic...how did you get a black background like that?

You can get a black background by using higher shutter speeds, ie 1/250
I usually like a brighter background with a dark subject, but being as the light was fading fast I was at or around 1/15 sec for correct exposure, trouble is at that speed you'll get camera shake or the bug will move, my actual shutter speed for the shot was 1/80 after I bumped it up a couple.
not taking into consideration the flash, with flash set on ETTL it applies the correct amount of power to expose the shot.


The other way is to make sure you have light fall off as is the case here, there is nothing but trees in the background a fair distance away and there is no way the flash would illuminate those trees in the background.
Have to be aware of your background composition.
