Hello!
Still stuck in a dilema!

I have 2 choices of upgrade for some weddings I've got booked in next year:

1-
Canon 40D+17-55mm f2.8
Canon 50mm f1.8 MK
70-200mm f2.8 L
10-22mm
580ex

or

2-
Canon 5d
Canon 70-200mm f2.8L
Canon 24-70mm f2.8L
Canon 50mm f1.8 mkII
Canon 580EX Flash

I currently have a 20D with 17-85mm is usm

I am on a budget and option 1 is cheaper. But, what would you do??
Help!

Thanks!

Rhys

I believe option 1 will do just fine. But for the 70-200 I will get the IS version. Since you can afford the option 2 so I guess that should not be an issue for you right.

I'd sell the 17-85 and go with option 1 but drop the 50 1.8 and pick up the IS of the 70-200

Captian Rhys---
Get what you can afford. Upgrade only as funds allow. Don't do the american thing and buy what your credit card allows........nooooooo..........not a good way to do business.

Some good ideas there, my suggestion:

70-200mm f2.8 L IS
2 x 580ex (one for the 20D)

Option 1 but i'd drop the 40D, get the 30D+ 17-55 (cheaper) which would allow you to get a 30mm sigma 1.4 or 50mm 1.4 instead of the 50mm 1.8. (wouldnt like to shoot a wedding with the 50mm 1.8 -- focusing in low light not good)

if you could sell the 17-85 and put the money towards buying the 70-200 2.8 ( IS ) version.

another flash would be nice too but that may be stretching it :D

Canon 50mm f1.8 MK

10-22mm

That's a nice wedding kit if you have a second body & back-up flash to go with it.

If you're truly on a budget I'd also consider replacing both the 50 1.8 and the 70-200 2.8 with a single lens, the 85 1.8.

And if truly, truly on a budget get used 20D's instead of new 40D.

I'm American and I don't do that. Oh, and American is with a capital A.

You are the rare minority my friend. According to statistics the average American (with capital A) has $10K in credit card debt.

you know, whenever I go to the USA (I refuse to call it America because there's only about a FEW DOZEN countries that make up the Americas, including Canada) I am amazed at how many adverts I see everywhere for

A. Debt consolidation and consultation
B. Pharmaceutical Drugs
C. Weight loss

So I'm inclined to believe stathunter here. ;)

Anyhow, there's nothing wrong with borrowing a bit to INVEST in your business. If you are serious about this and need the gear to build your business, it can make sense. If you are doing this as a hobby and just want more toys to play with, then borrowing might not be the best idea.

In any case, I would go with A minus the 50 1.8 and + the 70-200 2.8 IS. That's more than enough to deliver amazing quality. Arguably, after playing around with highlight tone priority, it might even deliver higher quality images than from the 5D in a wedding scenario... in which HTP just shines like crazy!

This is so true. I went to Amsterdam and while I was there, I saw the brothels and marijuana bars. Everyone from Amsterdam is a pot smoking whore. Also, I visited Rome and noticed a lot of graffiti. Therefore, Italy must be a country of vandals. When I went to Canada, all I saw were national parks. Just a bunch of granola-eating hikers in Canada.

Generalizations about countries based on trips taken there are a little shallow. Generalizations based on advertising are absurd at best.

;)

I wasn't making a generalization about the entire population. I was just backing up stathunter. he talked how credit card debt was a problem. After seeing a million debt consolidation ads in one hour of tv watching, all I was saying was that I believed his statement. wow, a little sensitive there... ;)

I'll go back and eat granola in my national park.
