Hi Bob. Alas, I just have PS7. But I'll take a look at those HDR links.

Thanks!

Matt

You may want to search for procedures that do essentially the same thing using two images taken on tripod and do not require more exotic tools. I know the ability to do it is in PS 7, but I cannot give you a specific link.

There is also an Open Source tool called QTPFSGUI that does pretty fair HDR and Tone Mapping for free. www.qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net (external link)

That's a good idea, Bob. I'll do that.

Thanks for the link, Walt...but it 404'd on me. Maybe they're having some server trouble. I'll check the link tomorrow.

Another alternative to "standard" PS CS2/3 HDR is to take an image and process it for more than one level as more than one layer. This works well if you shoot RAW and process a RAW file in Camera Raw. In earlier versions of PS you would save each processed file as a PSD or Tiff, then layer them over each other and paint in the differences as desired. You get a lot of adjustment latitude tha way. The automated HDR is, though, a lot less work:)!

Hi Guys

Any of you had experience with the 580ex? Did it work well with the 400d?

Cheers,

I use a 580 EX and it works fine with my 30D and 5D, and I see no reason why it would not be great with the 400D. What differentiates it from the 430 EX is 1)higher power and 2) the ability to be a wireless master to the 430 slaves. Valuable capabilities, IMHO.

Saturday was the big day for me, my XTI arrived. I did spend the good part of Saturday afternoon playing around with it after I charged up the battery. All I have to say is.....WOW! What a great camera. I even think the Canon Software that came with the camera is great. I did not get my new CF card yet, so I can't go picture taking crazy at this point. I'm using a 256MB card, so I can get about 50 shots on there.

Here is a question, and I hope this is not the indication of a problem. Sometimes, while using the camera in the full auto mode, I hear a sound like a bug zapper when the camera is trying to focus. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I haven't had any trouble taking pictures, and I really hope this is not a problem with teh camera.

Thanks!

the sound is proably the motor and gears turning as the camera focuses.

Cheers,

I have and it works great. The 580EX and 430EX were both made to work with the latest crop of EOS DSLR's and work seamlessly together. Great output, quick cycle time, beautiful images.

Personally, I have a 430EX since it's more in line with what I think a flash should cost. Still works great. No matter which you choose, you'll need a flash diffuser. The Gary Fong Lightsphere works great and I'm a big fan...but I also can't see spending $50 for it.

There are Chinese-made knockoffs that can be found online or you can go with a simple bounce card.

Alex

I know you didn't ask this but like Alex I have the 430ex and it works great with my 400D. Most of my shooting is outdoors but using this flash at family get togethers and the odd portraits I do works super.

Ok.. Thanks for sharing that.. My main purpose for this would be indoor night as well. What aperture do you use to take like a family of 4 to 6?

Cheers and Thanks,

I don't have a studio - most take place at home so theres really no set formula for me. It would depend on what available light there is and what the background and surrounding area is. And also what the setting is - are they all in a line or more informal. That will define how much DOF I need.

In the photo sharing/people section of this forum there are some good posts by XTi users like this one
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=399709 that can help.
