I have a 300mm f2.8 non IS and have lost the lens hood. It seems as if the hood is a ET118 but that is no longer available.

Will the ET120 fit this lens it's the one off the IS model.

Thanks

can anyone tell me the diameter of the front of a canon 300mm 2.8 IS lens so I can see if it's the same as the 300 non IS.

Thanks.

According to the searches I did it won't fit. The hood in question is unique to your lens.

There's one on ebay, but it looks as though he only ships within the USA. Maybe you could plead with him to ship to UK. Or if you know anyone in the USA that could help out.

Did you have any luck with the one listed on ebay?

Maybe someone in the US from this forum could help out with the shipping problem if you asked nicely?

The EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM (the IS version) has a maximum diameter of 128mm. The EF 300mm f//2.8L USM (the non-IS version) has a maximum diameter of 125mm. With these large lenses, the maximum diameter is very close to the hood mounting diameter, so the ET-120 hood will not work.

Unfortunately, Canon does not make, and has never made, another lens with a 125mm maximum diameter, so The ET-118 hood is required--if you go with a Canon hood.

I recommend you try the following. Go here:

http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/ (external link)

and download the paper hood for the 300mm IS. Print it out twice, and put one copy aside.

Without gluing it, cut out and make one hood. Yes, it will be slightly too big, so overlap the join just a bit more so it fits your lens.

Check it out. See how it works. It may require minor trimming to fit snugly.

Assuming it works, then take the other copy of the printout and use it as a template to cut a hood pattern from semi-stiff sheet plastic. Roll it and glue it, making any adjustments you made to your trial copy.

Spray paint the inside with flat black paint to eliminate any reflections that might cause glare.

VoilĂ ! You have a new hood for your lens for only pennies (okay, pence). The primary difference is that it is pressure fit instead of bayonet mount, but the price is definitely right.

If your pressure fit mount is a little loose, or becomes loose, it can be tightened with a large rubber band. Use a red one to complement your red ring.

Truth is the original hood is made of carbon fibre and it is a limited production item, so it is bound to be expensive. But at $400 that replacement parts go, it is well worth to improvise.

I would start by looking at plumbing PVC tubes. Even if the tube is larger than the appropriate diameter, one could bend and glue balsa wood or a rubber band around the rear end. I think that we can even find suitable screws for the lens mounting and fastening.
