Copying firmware from camera

Is there a way to get at the existing firmware installed in your camera and copy it to your CF card?

None that I'm aware of - but you can look to see what version of firmware is in your camera and may be able to find that version online where it can be downloaded to you computer and then transferred to a CF card.

The only problem is that you won't be able to find the first firmware that the camera ever shipped with; only later firmware updates are downloadable.

But being able to save the current version that's installed on the camera on to a CF card sure would be a handy feature. I've been wanting such a feature ever snce the 10D days.

Yep. After posting I did a Google seach to see how easy it would be to find different versions of the firmware and all I could find is the latest updates.
