I need advice. I will keep this short. So I did wed picx for a friend of mine and I gave to her the service and a set of proofs as a gift. No the in-laws are wanting a cd and are bugging her about it. Finally one day she called me almost in tears because they were pushing her to get the CD. I gave in and told her to get him off her back I would give them the CD. She was going to dinner with them that night and was going to ask them a few questions for me and then get back with me. Well she has dropped the ball a lot in getting back with me! Anyway yesterday I heard from the "dad in law" (JIM) and he was very rude with me. He said he wants to get the set of proofs from me and a CD. I told him that I never give my CD out because I don't want anyone to take my work to walmart to get it printed - He said he doesn't see why I can't throw the cd in also as part of the gift. He then said "besides you didn't even take all the pictures we wanted" ----- gave you a list and you didn't get every shot. I wanted to say "well if your son wasn't a hour late we would of got all the pictures" but instead I said "weddings usually do not run on time and so some pictures are missed". Then he said well - we want the proofs and the cd! When can you get these to me. I said I will order the prints and give you a call when they get in. He then said "so that does include the CD!" I stuck with Yes because that is what I told my friend- But now I am so mad I don't even want to stick with my word about the cd. What are my options.

A. follow through with giving him the CD and be done with him
B. give him the CD but low res! (this sounds mean - but thats how mad I am)

I keep playing this in my head and I know what I should of said "This is a gift me to..... and I am sorry if you assumed that included a CD but it does not.

Darn it. Why did I say I would give him a CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the mispelled words - just a little mad!

Sell it to him especially if he's gonna be an ass... You did this wedding as a gift to your friend, not her in-laws. You owe him nothing.

I don't think you should go back on your word. Unfortunately, I think you should give them the disc, and take it as a HUGE learning experience. Sorry, that sucks.

Give? Never. Sell, maybe.

Make it a CD of 300x200 pix @ 50dpi. Oh, and with a copyright logo on them.

Otherwise charge him for the CD, seriously. They are your pictures, he has no right to them. Make it expensive and hopefully he will get the idea. Or he will be thick and you get a lot of money, either way you win.

I would say at least $1000 for the CD. Seriously.

Can you split this up into paragraphs?

Give them the CD. The last thing you want is a bad recommendation.

This is what I think I should do too but for some reason I don't want to give into him. The inlaws steped on many toes staying in control of the wedding and I am the only "thing" he didn't have control over. NOW HE IS IN CONTRL!

Whats sad is I am not one to get upset easy.

give him a low resolution c.d. good enough to email to random relatives but NOT good enough to print.. If they want prints they can order them through you.. You said you would give him a cd just play dumb and tell him that you never give out full resolution cd's to clients you have your reputation to consider and allowing folks to get Walmart prints can potentially be very damaging.. But, i'd also charge him the bare minimum for prints......... plus an 'ordering' fee.. But, considering that it was a gift for a friend and she is now related to the not soo nice folks in question you do have to consider her feelings.. But, not to the point that you hate yourself for not having a backbone..

Give him a low resolution, watermarked CD and a price list that sets out your print prices and your high-res CD price - which should be no less than $1000. Charge him for the set of proofs, too.

He didn't specify a high-res CD, so don't give him one!

If none of you mentioned a HIGH RES CD, I would give them a low res. It was a gift, what more does he want?! And, you wouldn't be going back on your word. If they want the high res, charge them.

The only thing my husband says about the low res cd is he will eventually come back to get prints or to complain and is this the kind of person I want to deal with?

Hi Kai,

Sorry to hear that.
You said you gonna give himm a CD, but you never said that you would give them a good resolution and watermark-free CD.

So, I agree with some of the advices here, low res and your watermark (big one on the center of the image).

It's a GIFT. You didn't get paid, and he still wants more. I won't back down especially if he's that pushy.

Again, sorry to hear that.

If he keeps bug you, u know his #. Blocking someone's # is not that hard. What else is he going to do ? Sue you for giving a gift to your friend ?

tell him that it's low resolution... if he complains offer him the alternatives, with the price list. Explain your reasons and don't back down. It's all in how you say it. If you let him know that it's not up for debate or discussion than he won't have anything to complain about... and remind him that it was a GIFT to your friend..

My sentiments exactly. As Colonel Sanders once said to a chicken, "Stuff him!"

Give him something smaller than 233x350 @ 72 DPI. My friend printed out some really amazing 5.5x7 shots with web photos at that size. Really amazing what technology can do. Try maybe 30 DPI, if that.
