Stupid Mark III question

I don't believe the saying that the only stupid question is the one never asked, so I'm going to post my stupid question of the day.

Does the picture style setting affect the RAW image?

My logic tells me "No", that it would only affect the imbedded JPEG image that is displayed on the LCD or the camera produced JPEG when shooting in that format. The manual is silent.

I virtually always shoot in RAW, so I'm just wondering if the picture style setting impacts my work product in any way.

no it doesn't. if you only shoot RAW, the picture style setting will have zero impact on your file.

Indeed it doesn't. Basically pic-styles are only your "preset" to shoot with. If you set it to monochrome and shoot 100 raw files with it, they'll all be displayed in monochrome on your lcd as well as your computer.

You then could convert them all back to whatever other picture style and vice versa. Of course it makes sense to pick the best one right before shooting - saves time.

With jpeg's of course monochrome style will give you b/w only. No colour conversion possible.

In fact, if you shoot RAW, you can apply the pictures styles (any of them you have downloaded to your computer) after the fact. So, if you have a shot that you thought would look good in Twilight, but didn't, you could change it to Nostalgia or Autumn to see what effect that had on the file.

From my understanding, which is limited, if you use the canon software for processing the the raw files will be opened with your pic style applied as a starting point, these can obviously be changed as with all raw files.

I don't use DDP myself but from others that do I gather that by using the pic styles with RAW they can speed up there work flow as their shots are already close to "the way they want them"

If you want to ask a stupid question then you'll have to do better than this.

Thanks, that's all helpful to me.

Here's another question - how does that aperature thing work?

Don't answer that.

Me too - never quite got it figured out - only solution ( known to man or woman ) is to get a POTN strap

My favorite SLR question is, "Why is it just black when I look into the viewfinder?"

Yeah, I was recently showing someone the Mark III, and they held it up in front of their face about 12" away and asked why they couldn't see anything on the screen. I'm sure that's pretty common, although this was coming from someone who considers herself an experienced "photographer."

I gotta say, I used that for the first time this past weekend with a macro lens, and it is a pretty good feature.
