I'm with Bill and Lloyd and everyone else for that matter that says... FORGET about the noise!
I have a friend who obsesses about it too. He refuses to go above 400 because he hates noise.
I used to be bad like that too, but then I learned. This last wedding I worked I captured an image of the groom and his new bride's daughter dancing and it was really special. I used ISO 1600 and yes, it has some noise. But I printed it and the noise really gets lost in the actual subject of the photograph. What's more is I've shown this photograph to the groom, and he nearly cried. It's always best to capture the moment with a little grain (noise) than not capture it at all, or worse yet, capture it and have it look like crap after trying to push up the exposure.
