40D CF Card Recommendations? -Air Show Next Friday

I want to pick up an 8GB CF card for an upcoming air show.

What are the groups' recommendations? Should I go with UDMA? I would like the most bang for the buck to go with my 40D and be able to do long bursts at 6.5 fps. I really don't care how long it takes to load them on the computer, what I do care about is a fast write speed to keep up with the 40D and a card that will be 100% reliable.

In the past, I've used Kingston (1GB) and SanDisk (4GB and 2GB) with no problems, but I've never owned or used one in the 8GB realm. I want the best I can get.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best,

Michael

The size of the CF card isn't the issue really.. It the write speed.. I shot an airshow with my Extreme III card by San Disc and had no problems... The San Disc "Ultra" may not be fast enough, so I'd get the "Extreme" if you can... I think the Extreme IV is out which may be even faster than my III....

Extreme III works.
Hey...I know some other photogs that are planning on getting together to shoot the Miramar Air Show. Is that the one you are referring to?
If so...what day are you going?

As far as I recall, the Extreme III already supports faster write speeds than any of the current Canon cameras are able to support. The only real difference is that the Extreme IV can be read from twice as fast when downloading images to your computer, but only if you're using one of the Extreme IV card readers I think (which used Firewire). I'd stick with Extreme III for now, as the price difference last I checked was rather large when the Extreme IV is only offering marginal practical improvements.

Yes, it's the Miramar Air Show. I'll be in the Semper Fi Challet on Friday the 12th for the 9AM to 4PM show. Please email me at prefix@gmail.com (external link)

I'd love to hook up with some fellow photog/air show buffs. My Father is retired Air Force, so you can imagine that I'm an air show addict!

Best,

Michael

P.S.

UPS just arrived!!! Time to open my 40D replacement!

If I remember correctly extreme III run at 20MB/sec and IV at 40MB/sec. None of the current dSLR can handle UDMA speed. 40D I think max out at 20MB/Sec so I would just get the extreme III.

I'd consider going with a couple of 4Gb cards rather than one 8Gb. If, for some reason, the card fails or gets lost, you don't want to lose all your images.

Regarding the Miriamar Airshow: The show website says the F-22 Raptor demonstration will take place only at the Friday show.

when the 1dsmkiii comes out, it will support UDMA natively and should be able to take advantage of the extra speed (wouldn't surprise me if later on 1dmkiii magically gets UDMA support in a firmware update)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I shoot college sports with a 40D and I use the Extreme III 8GB and I haven't had a problem (knock on wood)

I'll be there on Friday! I'll post pics of the Raptor!

I'm beginning to think that going with the 4GB cards may be better. Both my 350D and 40D can't tell me how many images the card will hold unless I set the quality to raw or jpg + raw. In large fine, the shots remaining counter reads: 999

Today, my first trip out with my 40D replacement, using a SanDisk Ultra II 4GB card, I shot 1543 large/fine shots before the card was full.

Interestingly, the ZoomBrowser software doesn't seem to handle that many shots in one folder. It lists 999 in the folder and many of them are out of order. I'll have to find another viewing program, any suggestions?

If anyone in the SD or LA area would like to meet me on Friday, Oct. 12 at the Miramar Air Show, please email me at prefix@gmail.com (external link).

I'll be in the Semper Fi Chalet, tickets are $90, but they are worth it, you get a better place to sit, food, water, beer, wine, and it's right on the flightline in an ideal photography location. Also, there are lots of neat old guys who go to that chalet used to fly warbirds for real. They sure are great to talk to.

Best,

Michael

I believe while burst mode you are using camera baffer but not a card? I use to shot airshow with much slower cameras fine, most important is your position and weather & sun this day. I would suggest CPL if lots of sun and glare.

I thought about using a C-PL but in San Diego...it is far enough South that the sun at mid day is sort of in front of you. So close ups I don't think you get the benefit of the C-PL but ingress and egress shots from the E or W should work, right?

I never been this place can't say, I am shooting in Atlantic City every year. CPL helped from metalic glare.
