Ansel Adams is turning over in his grave due some recent postings on internet forums these days.

God created dust, so it can't be that bad. Ask yourself this. What would Jesus do?

I just spoke with Canon USA, the Virginia office, and they said that the sensor should not be dirty out of the box.

Errmmm...

Seriously, did you really think they'd say anything else?

Nope.

I do want to verify that the frigg'n service center will clean it at no cost before I make the 2 hour drive up there. That was my primary reason to call other than to pitch my ****.

I'm going out to get some clicks and and see how this one performs on something other than blue sky. :D

I did the same thing and shot the sky straight out of the box - yes, it's got dust on the sensor, probably even more than the OP's. Taken some "real life" shots today and there's no sign of the dust. I'm not going to worry about it for now and maybe eventually I'll get round to giving it a wet clean if I start to see problems.

Just bought a new car. Got it home and looked under the hood. Found oil all over the engine. Would you be pissed? After all, oil will get all over the engine so live with it. Why should we look at cameras any different? If Canon does not use clean rooms to manufacture their equipment, maybe they should. Personally, I'd be pissed if there was dust ( or worse yet oil ) on my sensor right out of the box. M24, stick to your guns and have Canon clean it to your satisfaction.

Yeah, who uses f/32 that often? Well, I don't, but on a tripod for still life, I use f/22 quite often.

You do not get diffraction at f22 ? I guess it is different then XT I do not use over f16.

I don't completely understand this position. Even if it is completely clean right out of the box, more lube and dust is going to end up on the sensor with use. Who is responsible then? You have to eventually take responsibility for keeping it clean. What is one more cleaning?

To me, it is more the principle of the matter. I bought it new so I expect it clean. Maybe another car analogy: Would you mind buying a new car with a scratch on it? After all, you will get more scratches on it anyway.

DDan, If its dust after the fact then i have no trouble with your statement
If theres oil there though....
Then the heck with it. Canon should have taken this into consideration in the designing stages and eliminated the problem to start with and not released the product before hand.
you cant say its a problem they would not of known about.

It wouldnt be a Big problem cleaning the sensor if Canon readily accepted that this happens and supplied a cleaning kit and full set of instruction on how to clean a sensor.

But we all know that Canon wont do this.

A scratch, no. I can't repair that myself. This doesn't apply. Would you reject a new car because the windows are dirty?

But we all know that Canon wont do this.

They have to put lubricant on the mechanical bits in the camera. When you use the camera some of it is going to become dislodged and end up on the sensor. This is not a design issue. They could run each camera through a break in period in the factory and then clean the sensor. This will add to the manufacturing/retail cost. I prefer to pay a lower price and handle the break in and associated cleaning myself.

I agree with the complaint about the lack of an acceptable cleaning kit. Canon acts like these things don't need cleaning. They need to get over that and make a sensor that can be cleaned by us without the risks we have to take now. No doubt about that in my mind.

I find that a little ridiculous. Yeah I can ask them to clean the windows and it is a small thing for them to do and they will comply. When it rains tomorrow and the windows need to be cleaned again, then what? What does any of this have to do with undercoating?

Theres nothing wrong with your thinking i believe Dan.
As well as i believe that im right and so are the other posters.
It comes down to personal prefrence and what is reasonable for your expectations.

I believe that something that we cannot, under warranty clean should be clean in the first place and stay clean of "oil". Dust and crap that gets on the sensor of our own making is different.

BTW i was having fun with the car annolgy and believe it is a silly one at that
