Dust happens, and I think out of the box is a sad thing, but I took a whole 2000 pictures at Jackson, WY and didn't see the dust in picture one and had to PS the rest. It's okay. At least it's just bunnies. :)

I believe that something that we cannot, under warranty clean should be clean in the first place and stay clean of "oil". Dust and crap that gets on the sensor of our own making is different.

This is what I have a problem with. The sensor/filter should not be so soft that wiping a piece of dust across it destroys it. If there isn't a method of cleaning available that does not void my warranty, then Canon should provide free cleaning for life and they should pickup the shipping costs and have a turnaround time of 1 day.

Doesn't the 40D have the dust cleaning mode? Did someone try that yet?

Edit: Isn't that the whole point of Canon putting the "vibrating" thing on the sensor because dust just happens. Are people telling me that doesn't work at all? Has anyone been doing the cleaning and is it worth anything?

I have a 400D and it cleans itself every time I turn it on or off. The problem is that it doesn't work with the lubricant blobs on a new camera. I am not sure if it will keep the dust bunnies off as I don't have enough shots on my camera yet. I am still cleaning the lubricant blobs off. Time will tell.

When this happened with my first 40D, berfore it ER99'd, I presented my theory regarding lubricant being the root cause of most of the most of the initial blobs to the tech at Canon. He indicated that it might very well be true, given the high frame rate of the camera.

To update the group, the Sr. Customer Service Rep in Virginia called me back at home about a half hour after my first call. She had called the Service Manager at the Irvine location. Long story short, she was very apologetic for my inconvenience, gave me her direct line and asked me to call her before I make the drive to Irvine. She indicated that she will call the Mgr. in Irvine and let him know I'm on the way. She also stated that he would personally make sure I was taken care of. Having to drive 2 hours each way will be a pain, but I must say that it seems that Canon is trying their best to satisfy this customer. They will indeed clean the camera for free and should have it done in less than 2 hours. There's a nice mall next door, so I'll go hang out and have some java.

In the mean time, I'm going to shoot the crap out of this camera and get as many clicks as I can. I'm going to change lenses many times and give this thing a serious workout. I plan on going to Irvine on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

I took 1543 shots today, and at first blush, the images I looked at seem a bit softer than the ones produced by my first body. The conditions were different, so I'll just keep shooting and see if it ER99s. I'm not even going to scope the sensor until the day I drive up to Irvine.

When the folks at Irvine have my 40D, I'm going to ask them to make sure everything is in spec and maybe see if I can get them to calibrate it to my 70-200 f/2.8L IS. That was the lens I used today and it seems that many of the shots were front focusing a bit.

I'll keep shooting, forget about the blobs, and hopefully, this time next week, I'll have a squeaky clean and well-tuned camera for the airshow.

I realize that I will eventually have to learn to clean my sensor on my own, but my cleaning results with my 350D using the same products my local camera shop uses (Eclipse and PhotoSol swabs) were not exactly stellar. Perhaps a bi-yearly trip to Irivine will be in my future?

I'm going to try to make friends with whoever I deal with up there because, more than likely, I'll be needing their services in the future. :D

Best,

Michael

Has it been clarified which version of Eclipse fluid (or other suitable ones) is required for the 40D sensor???

PS Sorry in advance if I have missed this somewhere in the thread :)

I don't find your post funny at all. In fact, if there is an "ignore feature" on this forum, I'm going to add you to it.

I don't know if you are the sort who enjoys being rude and takes pleasure in other people's grief, but if you are, I'd rather not communicate with you.

My 350D, that I picked up in Sept. '05 was spotless from the factory. I do believe I have a legitimate issue having received two new 40D bodies with senors that were covered with debris right out of the box.

I'll refrain from any explitives that could get me kicked off this forum.

I'll end my redress to you by saying that your post was not that of a gentleman.

Excellent. Please avail yourself of that feature (yes, this forum has it).

According to "Joel" at Photograpic Solutions, the E2 fluid and type 2 swabs are indicated for the 40D and 400D. My experience in trying to clean the sensor on my first 40D body was not good. The E2 fluid left tons of streaks and smudges. It took 6 or 7 swabs to get the sensor mostly clean.

Perhaps it was some sort of lube after all. In any event, that first body subsequently locked up giving ER99s about 10 times with three different CF cards and two Canon lenses.

That was why I sent the first one back. We'll see about this body. In spite of dArth sIdiot's comic, I believe my complaints are valid. No one should have to clean their $1300 body right out of the box. Like I stated, my pedestrian 350D was perfect out of the box. Either Canon's Q/C has gone down hill and Darth is a jerk, or Darth is a jerk and I've had some bad luck.

Back on point, I don't plan on ever using the E2 solution again. I MIGHT try Delkin's solution, which is made about 15 minutes north of me. Their Rep. stated that their solution is so neutral that it will work on any sensor in any DSLR.

We'll see.

Best,

Michael

That'll push that 2 hour quote you got though. You got promised a few things by Canon, so I probably wouldn't push it with a bunch of other requests on the spot, unless you're fine with it potentially taking longer.

Yep, I've thought about that. I need to get more clicks in with this body. If I continue to see soft images, I'll make the choice at the time.

If the Irvine service center is as good as the one in Tokyo, they should be able to tell pretty quickly if my 40D is in spec. Back in April, I was in Tokyo and there was a Canon Digital Resource Center across the street from the Hilton I was staying in. They cleaned and fully inspected my 350D in just about an hour, gratis.

I'll update the group as things progress.

At the end of the day, it's just a camera, although it is one that I hope to fall in love with and get several years of reliable service from, but if not, then so be it.

Best,

Michael
